Scorpius vs Zephyr

I tried the Zephyr and loved it but how would it compare to a Scorpius?

OK

Oh thought this was a movie trailer thread. Shit how awesome of a monster movie would that be?

Zephyr vs Scorpius! I got my money on scorpius. Way more of a badass name than zephyr.

But Zephyr has chine attack power!

No one knows if it really works, by Zephyr REALLY REALLY believes it does.

#4 Fri, 04/11/2008 - 9:07am

Sweet! Yeah Zephyr does have the mysterious chine attack power but Scorpius has been doing super secret training on an outer island. No one is sure how good he is. Kind of like the Rocky IV mojo.

Plus the chine attack power only powers up when Zephyr is moving at 9 mph. So Scorpius has the advantage at slower speeds.

Zephyr scoffs at your super secret training. He is Zephyr, son of Stingray. Brilliant engineering and costly features will compensate for his lack of training. "Zephyr, Activate chine power now!"

Welcome to the forum, another legitimate question ransacked by the creative genius of OC paddlers ;-)

I am sure someone 'in their right mind' will eventually post something informative.

Mahalo.......Pittbrah

Chine power is no match for the super sleek physique of Scorpius. Its venomous stinger used to defeat Orion cannot be conquered. It is futile to try! Zephyr and lowly lackey Pittbrah are not match for the SCORPIUS!!!

#8 Fri, 04/11/2008 - 12:16pm

Poops you stoops too low ;-)

Hey come on, I will be paddling a Kai Wa'a this year.....I left Chine power behind last year !!!

LOL

#9 Fri, 04/11/2008 - 1:44pm

Haha! Pittbrah, you be the sensible one here and give mulus a comparison. It'd be interesting to hear.

In the meantime the battle continues....

#10 Fri, 04/11/2008 - 2:46pm

Zealot! How dare you mock the chine! Zephyr's perfect angular belly design is a juggernaut of monster perfection. Scorpius and his insect brood will bow before Zephyr.

Fools! You all shall soon be smitten by the terrible powers of Kamanu's newest creation! Release the Kraken!!!!

Pittbrah?

does anyone know hull weights for each boat?

#14 Sat, 04/12/2008 - 3:21pm

Sorry Mulus,

I have not seen nor been on the Scorpius or Zephyr. They are just coming in to my locale this spring. Looking forward to trying a Scorpius personally.

I went with a Pegasus this year to complement the Kaimana my Wife and I already have (which we absolutely love - its great in everything). I sold my Fuze last summer...it wasn't the ride I was expecting for me.

#15 Sun, 04/13/2008 - 5:44am

Weight isn't really 'that important' of a factor between boats - i.e. 2-5 lbs doesn't make a huge diff on the water. Many of us could gain to shed a few lbs, myself included :-)

No idea what the actual weights of the two boats will be but here are some numbers of 'actual weights' of rides from respective builders for what I own(ed) that I weighed on a digital scale.

Kaimana (4 years old) - Carbon, Fully Rigged - 30lbs total - Hull 23 lbs
OC Fuze (2007) - Carbon/Kevlar, Fully Rigged 36 lbs - Hull 28 lbs
Pegasus (2008) - Carbon, Fully rigged 28-29lbs, Hull 21-22lbs

I typically find the new OC Fuze, Fusions to be heavier than other comparable boats which makes sense due to the use of Carbon/Kevlar and the Gel coat quality is exceptional. The boats are definitely built very solid and that shows up in their extra weight.

I would 'expect' based on the build methods that the Zephyr and Scopius would weigh in roughly the same Hull weight if they were both 100% Carbon. If the Zephyr was Carbon/Kevlar as are many Outrigger Connection current models I would expect a 2-4 lb increase in that build.

Ask the dealers/builders for 'expected weights'.....though that is not a guarantee that the boat you get will be on the money.

Damnit you guys.....youre interupting the battle. Sit down and shut up. Thats some funny shit and I wanna hear how it ends.
Gentlemen, please continue.

#17 Sun, 04/13/2008 - 11:23am

If by "hull weight" you mean "laser beam eyes" then Zephyr's chined corneas will seer the gel coat off Kamanu's locally-built and honorable surface. Yet another heretic will cower in the wake of zephyr's overbearing and slightly irritating presence.

"Zephyr, activate sales whore behavior NOW!"

junior was first by a-lot actaully...

#22 Sun, 04/13/2008 - 3:34pm

im pretty sure this was third...looks like a familiar boat to this discussion right?

#23 Sun, 04/13/2008 - 3:36pm

Chine riders finish one and two at state meet?

#25 Sun, 04/13/2008 - 3:59pm

Wow. Cant remember when was the last time that happened.
Those guys would have won on any boat, chines or no chines. I think the gap would have been bigger if Jr.was on a scorpious.

#26 Sun, 04/13/2008 - 4:57pm

Was Kai there?

#27 Sun, 04/13/2008 - 5:01pm

actaully, i didnt see him.

#28 Sun, 04/13/2008 - 5:08pm

Kia was not there ...everyone knows its not the boat but the paddler that wins races...I think it is great that Manny is trying new boats to test which one improves his over all time.I was at the start with him and he just took off like a bullet...I have a custom made Zephyer and it takes a bit of getting use to in the surf...I was on a Fusion last year and found I was not swimming as much as this season but I think once you can get the Zephyer dialed in like Keral has it is a rocket. But once again its for the most part the paddler not the canoe...

#29 Sun, 04/13/2008 - 5:32pm

thank you...perfectly said...why i still use my beat up old orange and blue stingray. what color is your boat, and your # ill find and put up your picture from the finish...

#30 Sun, 04/13/2008 - 5:35pm

just to clear up my own confusion.

Kia=Kai
Keral=Karel

right?

#31 Sun, 04/13/2008 - 11:16pm

My early perceptions after first getting on a Zephyr were similar to eddiesurfhawaiis` . I had the feeling of being dumped out quite a bit but after dialing in you can anticipate the movement of the canoe and use it to your advantage.

The Zephyr is a very advanced design and paddlers like Jr. and Manny are able to squeeze every ounce of performance out of it.

Manny squeezed out a pretty good paddle at the Oahu Relay last month on a Scorpius.
The results are located elsewhere on Ocpaddler.

Weighed a rigged [China] Zeph usiing a decent (not great) quality bathroom scale by weighing myself a few times then my weight with boat on shoulder a few times. 35 lbs. However, need other boats on same day at same location on same scale to know relative weights.

Biggest problem I had was holding onto the Zeph; it just wanted to scoot out of my hands and fire off down the road; those chines just don't like standin' still, they wanna plane all day long. If I had a round bottom'd boat I'm sure it would've just sat on my shoulder lazily like a giant wet noodle...

#34 Mon, 04/14/2008 - 7:28am

umm guys, if you haven't noticed there's a very important battle going on here. You guys are totally ruining the epic scene. Take your sensibility elsewhere.

#35 Mon, 04/14/2008 - 8:11am

aaaaayeee, aaaayeee ...

Eyes pop open...

From the depths of the Ala Wai, a once great warrior reawakens to heed the battle crys of his family and with no apparent movement slowly swims out........

#36 Mon, 04/14/2008 - 9:38am

Scorpius is no match for sales whore behavior and is mortally wounded. Its doom is imminent against the evil and corrupted Zephyr army called OC East Coast Team Riders and death is certain with the aid of Keral, son of Keral, rising from the depths Kawainui Marsh and helping Zephyr crush Scorpius.....

#37 Mon, 04/14/2008 - 10:42am

Victory! Zephyr smiles, plotting his next OC East Coast Team Rider recruitment utilizing the stringent criteria of "people who have bought one."

Scorpius was no match for his international agreement. He later promotes himself to Emeterius Paddlus Posterus Nonstopedus. His lacky, e02060, receives the title of midpacker, third-class.

Gator returns home, seems there is no place for a rough surfaced, un-chined relative anymore.

... casts a gaze and submerges'....

#39 Mon, 04/14/2008 - 6:33pm

Allow me to retort, Its the paddlers not the canoe…Manny made it 1st in a Scorpious then second in a different canoe. Jr. is fast on anything. It sounds like splitting hairs when it comes to the fast canoes. But the true way to tell is try one. Looking forward to trying a Scorpius some day.I sure did love the Zephyr. Let the battle rages on. Ill sit down and shut up now.

No way; it's gotta be the boat. Otherwise what good would it do to put chines on these racers so that we get marketed to throw more money at poor fitness and lousy technique?

Sure beats working out or spending more time on that damn ocean!

#42 Tue, 04/15/2008 - 10:27am

...I vote: boat.
