Mar 21 - Cramer & Abeytia win Maui shoreline relay

Maui Canoe & Kayak Club – 2004 Hurricane Ocean Racing Series
Race 6 – Shoreline relay – 23 miles

What a beautiful morning; calm seas, sun shining, & happy paddlers. First start at 9:45am, all co-ed, women and solo paddlers (except sponsor Mike Giblin, el solo paddler extraordinaire who started with the 2nd pack - the men). Relay racing is so exciting; you just never know what’s in store.

The awesome team of Deb Robison & Barbara Querry on Mike’s prototype OC-2 Hurricane clicked on the first run and was first to the change. This made things exciting especially when Molokai’s crew, the Kalama’s & Alike & Michele both got hit by a sneaker set which tossed a few paddlers into the ocean. By the 2nd change Junya & Andrea had a substantial lead which we were able to improve on during our 2nd run by catching those little runners off Olowalu. At Olowalu Alika & Michele again got hit by a set while we all watched and yelled advice, “get back on & paddle”, “ just walk & push it in…” they finally made it through about 4 waves and changed off with their anxious partners Linda & Kurt. Unfortunately the sneaker sets didn’t stop at Olowalu as Junya & Andrea got pushed around at Guardrails. Luckily Junya is big and strong as he paddled the OC-2 out of harms way, the rocks, while Andrea swam for the seats. Hooo, too much excitement.

Everything was ahead of schedule until Lahaina. We could all see that the wind line had filled in and was unfortunately blowing right in our faces. Once we hit the “breeze” and white caps we immediately thought of all the OC-1 solo paddlers and the novice and senior master crews on OC-1. Oh such pain to endure after 3+ hours of paddling. Solo paddler Margie Kawaiaea met the challenge head on, asking the wind where it had been the week before for our Maliko race; she pounded right through it to complete the course in just over 4 hours. Novice paddler Susie Richter was probably more determined and frustrated as she knew she could make her canoe move better than what they were doing. At the finish line they were draining her canoe for a very long time as it had gallons of water due to the plug coming out.

The men’s division had a battle of their own. The team of George Dagan & Mael Carey was leading the entire race, until Lahaina. They all met the same wind that we did however Jacob Abeytia took a big gamble and cut inside the shallow reef at Mala. Mael was already committed to going around the surf and through the wind. This tactical maneuver by Jacob gave his teammate Kekoa Cramer a bit of an edge at the change and Kekoa managed to pull out the victory by a little over a minute. He was quite satisfied with their accomplishment.

At the end of the race…, warm sunshine, great grinds and drinks at Leilani’s on the Beach and HAPPY PADDLERS!

A special thank you to Jennifer McGurn for being “the official” of the day and also a big Mahalo to the paddlers for respecting the honor code.

Aloha, Ricky & Sharon
