Who is going to win the Pa'a Moloka'i Solo?

I'm not really wondering, I just can't believe that no one has asked this yet.

...I'm not wondering because I ALREADY KNOW.

Picking the winner is too easy so , I`m going to attempt here to name the top 5 in two types of conditions.

In good surfing conditions the following are my top 5 picks:

1--- Karel Jr.
2---Kai
3---Manny
4---Danny
5---Luke

If its not good surfing or if its flat , here`s my picks:

Danny
Kai
Karel
Manny
Kealii

I know the glareing deletion here is Maui but I`m sticking with this list.

Have to support South Pacific Paddlers... I reckon Reuben from Rarotonga will be there somewhere in the mix, especially if it is in what the Hawaiians call 'flat', but what we in the rest of the world would call 'medium' conditions. Go hard, Reuben and Fletch - Cook Islands represent!!

#7 Fri, 04/18/2008 - 10:25am

Don't forget Tiger Canoe's Greg long who finished second in the flat last year & Reuben will definately be in the mix ..way to hard to pick !.... Junior has got over his issues with flat water & is a weapon these days... Manny rides bumps like no other ... Danny & Kai would put most Olympic athletes to shame .....glad I'm not a gambling man ...........

Go Longy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ... The Harv

Fuzerider, though i appreciate the 5th place, i think that i should remove myself from there. If those placings were based off last weeks race, then that would be Mael Carey in 5th place (our results were switched).

I think that there is more competition going into this solo then there has ever been before. And given that the top guys rarely race against each other in peak form, it's pretty difficult to really have any idea who will be in the top three. Should be exciting too see.

#9 Fri, 04/18/2008 - 12:25pm

give urself some credit luke. especially if ur n that bird boat lol...

#10 Fri, 04/18/2008 - 12:33pm

Yeah Longy is a solid paddler, and a great ambassador for paddling, hope he goes well this year. For the Hawaiians, its hard to go past Kai and Karel, both of them have been dominating this year, Karel seems to be peaking at the right time, if the results are anything to go by. Also Manny, who is good in any kind of ocean conditions, hope he goes well too. Especially want to give him props once again for setting up this event, and the one held earlier this year - he is helping to bring the sport back to the Hawaiian canoe paddlers, and its great to see all these great athletes rallying to support him.
May the best man (and woman) win, I reckon.

#11 Fri, 04/18/2008 - 12:35pm

Theres going to be a ton of talent out on the water for the solo, for sure.
Luke
s been improving in a big way over the last few years especially when the surfing is good. He and Kelly popped off a pretty dang good Catalina relay a couple of years ago when surf was decent.
Luke , your humility is admirable but, I`m going to keep you on my list for a top 5 finish .

Biggest questions:

What boat will Manny ride?

How you gonna handle if it goes "konas"?

Is there a rudderless division?

How long can one ride a boat-wake?And, if done, what are there penalties? (if any)

If you sleep on the beach, will you take your dodoo with you on your escort boat?

This Solo is going to be Exciting.

From what I've seen from the outside looking in, Kai is the man to beat, proving that if your in better shape than any one else you move FAST. Karel Jr. is always going to be a threat in any sort of bump and as "Harv" said (Jr. seems to have resolved his Flat Water issues). Then theres Manny, the guy has the speed in every category if its big he Will hang with Kai and Jr. if its flat he Will hang with Kai and Danny. And speaking of which, Ching is on fire right now looking to be in peak shape, none of those other three guys are going to not be thinking that the Cali guy is going to fall off pace when push comes to shove. Each one of these guys has won a Oahu race this year, and each one has continually placed in the top five. These guys I think are going to be the top Four given no boat malfunctions or mishaps.

Then there comes the list of Dark Horses, given different conditions you never know who can make an appearance in that realm of the super fast. You have your Mael's, your Luke's (if flat should both race rudderless), the young guys (not sure if either are racing) Jack and Ryan (who have unparalleled youthful speed), you have the scary guys who don't race all the time but are fast as hell, Arron N. The down under guys Greg L.(team Tiger), and Reuben (Cook Island's), and your other mainland guys, Sinkus (Ching's record holding Catalina partner), Justin Banfield (who doesn't not know how to paddle hard and fast). "Sorry if I neglected to mention anyone else, these are just a few that I know of. Any one of these guys could pose a threat in their specialized conditions."

The Dark Horses I mentioned above are guys that given the right conditions could put themselves up there with the Top Four and each one of these guys is a scary competitor to go up against. "Again sorry i didn't mention any more of the Kauai, Maui, Big Island, or Molo guys, and any Oahu guys who on any given day could put a damper on a leaders hopes of a 1st place finish."

Remember Life is Simple, Eat, Sleep, Paddle!!!

Heard a rumor that Kai is racing the Maui/Molokai the day before. Is that true? Wouldnt that pretty much take him out of the running due to fatigue?

#17 Mon, 04/21/2008 - 1:25pm

NOPE, aquafiend 65, his name isn't KAI for nothing.......
he is beyond most people can even dream about.....plus if he do it, is because he loves the ocean, he dont care to win both,he allready did win'em.... he go cause the fire in his heart, wouldn't you??

more power to him!!

Report in the Cook Is. News today lists Aaron as piloting Reuben's support boat ..

Rough seas just what he wanted

All eyes were on top Cook Islands canoeist Reuben Dearlove (above) when he turned tables on the Hawaiians yesterday.
Our outrigger champion surged across the finish line in third place about 30-40 seconds behind the winner in a pre-race event ahead of the Kaiwi Channel (Molokai Channel) Solo World Championship.
In rough seas of the kind he considers ideal, Dearlove felt at home and helped set the pace alongside Hawaiians Aaron Napoleon and Manny Kulukulualani at the front of the pack. All three finished within 40 seconds of each other.
Dearlove is a guest of the Napoleon family in Hawaii, and in the big Molokai race Aaron Napoleon will drive Dearlove’s support boat.
Yesterday’s race went from the eastern side of the island of Oahu near Kailua to the southern end at Hawaiikai. “It was rough and just like he enjoys at home,” reported a member of the Napoleon family. “It’s exactly what he’ll be hoping for at the weekend.” JW

Hey Bamskii you have to choose one or the other as da winnah ! or do you just like a safe bet ! ..The Harv

E kala mai. I actually had Reuben on the list but forgot to mention Danny. When I edited it, I may have made a mistake. Plus Aaron is my hero. Every race I tell him that when I close enough to yell it at him.

List is as follows:

1) Kai or Karel Jr.
2) Kai or Karel Jr.
3) Manny
4) Danny
5) Maui
6) R. Dearlove
7) Kea
8) Peter
9) G. Long
10) Sorry Tapa, forgot about Aaron Crepps.

11 through #20 should be the interesting pack. And also the spoilers, or aka "dark horses".

Harv, when it comes to Aaron N. I'll be a little biased. He's one of the reasons why I got into OC-1. Especially the 2003 Kauai Challenge clip where he's touching the water with his right hand and flying the ama with no hesitation. Smooth...

What ever happened to Thibert or Mike Judd? Didn't see their names on the official competitors list. I think Kelly Foster and Luke will be there somewhere too I reckon, that is if the epoxy resin fumes haven't got to them already!
Actually the competition is tough for sure - its going to be real interesting to see the results. Wish I was up there, the conditions are supposed to be looking good too.

#21 Mon, 04/21/2008 - 3:11pm

Is there gonna be any kind of live feed/footage?

#22 Mon, 04/21/2008 - 3:27pm

Bamskii ... If your name is Napoleon you were born to be an all round good guy .. but no way in the world Reubs is going to beat Longy though (I'll probably have to eat those words as all of Cook Islands will be watching)
.....sentimental (& smart) choice .... I'm going for Jr as numero uno, no doubt this will stress Karel even more .. The Harv

Does anyone know what the results were for the Hui Nalu fundraiser race 'Kala Kukea Ironman Challenge' held yesterday? Just curious to see who came in where...

Thibert is #5 on the list of paddlers and Mike is #75
