If you put together your clubs 6 best OC1 paddlers, does that usually translate into the best OC6 crew?

no way. one of our clubs most hammer paddlers comes last place in one man time trials. i beat him and i suck. he would smash me in a six man.

YES? Only a one-man paddling prodigy would say something like that…

Sometimes. It’s a good indicator, generally, but there are always exceptions. Some guys fast on one man, but just don’t blend; others w/ diesel six man power but just don’t like oc1, etc. There’s nothing like a one man time trial to keep everyone sharp and training, though. And at a certain time of year, maybe 8-12 weeks prior to the big one, many top crews will pretty much train solely in the six.

Lanikai Canoe Club has a good article on their website about philosophy of building a winning team and club and OC-1’s place in building a winning team. Page 6 and 7 written by David Daniels

Also if you do a search, I think this topic was discussed in a past thread.

In the article, Dave tells us that two of the guys on Lanikai’s 2005 2nd crew came in top ten in that year’s solo. That pretty much says it all about the value of oc1 performance when determining what the fastest six man crew will be. For clubs with less talent than Lanikai, oc1 time trial is even less relevant.

OC1 can be a good indicater of fitness, but in the OC6 , like Jim says, its da blend. Doesn’t matter how strong you are if you can’t match the other paddlers in the canoe.

I agree in this formula. We had this one guy if you put him in a double with any skipper he would fly. but was not that fast in a single. It would be interesting to see the guidelines they would use to determine who gets on.

If you put 6 Goto’s in a six-man and no Banfields could they win a bar fight?
In a ll seriousness the 6 best oc1 guys will usually make a good oc6 team (unless there is no steersmen). Its not always the best, but its usually pretty close.
And the 2 guys in Lanikai’s 2nd crew for the 2005 Solo could have made Lanikai’s 1st crew faster… You never know. Sorry Jim

I can only win barfights WITH a Banfield in my boat… and THAT’S a scientific fact.
My nose is almost all the way healed up, BTW.

Well, they won the race by about 11 minutes that year, but 2nd crew did real well, too, so who knows? Teamwork is huge at that level, I think, so I’d have to think then Coach Pat Erwin had a good reason to make the decision he did.

I was just wondering how many of everyones top OC6 crew are also thier top 6 OC1 paddlers. Was it 6 of 6? 5 of 6? 4 of 6? etc………..

In my latest Gold Coast Cup video, all of the paddlers in my crew are strong OC 1 paddlers except one, who has never been near an OC1.
The difference is, everyone reacts in the 6 man as if they are on a one man canoe. So there are no delays or having to wait for someone to call instructions, they react intuitively to changing ocean conditions etc. If the canoe’s not running right, they adjust slightly and the rhythm returns. It’s a great feeling, like one brain controlling many bodies. Steerer hardly ever needs to communicate verbally.
This to me is the big advantage of Oc1 paddlers in the OC6.
We are not a big crew, seat 1 and 2 are only 74kg and 70kg.

ah come on goto. naw ur right u were always top dawg. but ur not with us at the moment. rambo is right if u paddle oc1 regularly u tend to treat oc6 the same way in ur reactions as a crew. now that i have been paddling oc1 a lot when the ama pops up in the oc6 i feel more confident to just fly it how i would on my oc1 instead of freaking out like normal. just another thought…

Youre a genius!!!
How cool would it be to have an event at the regattas where teams compete to see who can fly theOC6 ama the longest? That would be a great spectator sport right there!!!
