A new event, born from the fertile collective mind of ocpaddler.com

OC6 ama flying.

It could happen during sprint season.

Start at the outside buoy........when you hit the buoy, ama's up. A judge, for each boat, times the "air time". Winner is based on speed from buoy to buoy as well as "air time"

That actually sounds like a good idea. It sure would be fun as hell to watch. It could also be called the "Novice B Huli Drill."

The only problem is the current regattas are insufferably long already. We would need to prune some events. Maybe reduce from Fresh, Soph, Junr, Senr to just two open events, the 1.5 mile and the 1 mile.

We have a"graduation" ceremony, so to speak, for our novice intro program. Two of the challenges include flying the ama in an OC-6, and the other is a huli and recovery that's timed. We make them try to fly the ama first, because inevitably that leads to the second challenge. They're timed from the time the ama hits the water to the time they are fully bailed and paddling back to shore. We measure the water left in the boat, and if it's higher than their ankles we assess a penalty.

It makes for a great spectator sport. We have a barbecue, some beer, and cheer on the novii. It's a great ice-breaker and welcome to the club.
