hurricane rudder "cable" replacement

Ii am looking for a description of the basic change out of the Hurricane steering "cable". My big issue is the final step in aligning the pedals at the right depth and the "cable" tie-off. Is there anyone proficient in this skill willing to provide information?

kicbac,

Is the cable system enclosed or exposed (older model)?
My 2cents: Just remember to push the cable through the pedal then you can easily untie. Its hard to explain, but if you just push through then it all becomes clear.
If you purchased from tri paddle, call Wendell.

if this is a newer boat using spectra cord, You should have received all the parts you need to complete the process, There us NO tying of any of the lines, The Lines/cables attach to the pedals using a small loop system, They interlock. Essentially there is a a loop at the end of the cable, and another small red loop with a small piece of plastic that fits into the pedal, You loop them together like looping two rubber bands. Again No tying, they should end up being even so your rudder sits straight, if not you can twist the line to shorten one side,

I have a file that has pictures and explanations of all the steps, send me an email I can send it on to you.

"My big issue is the final step in aligning the pedals at the right depth and the “cable” tie-off"

Not exactly sure what info you need, but I have a 1/2" x 1" x 24" piece of wood that has a 3/8" to 1/2" wide by 8" deep "V" notch cut into the center. The rudder slips into the "V" notch. There is a line drawn down the center of the wood. On the opposite end of the "V" notch the wood is cut to a tapered end.....like a sword. I slip the rudder into the "V" notch with the tapered end pointing towards the bow. I use a "C" clamp to close the "V" notch around the rudder. Then I align the tapered end of the wood to the center of the hull using the bow and drain holes as reference. Once I feel that the wood is pointing exactly to the bow centerline, thus aligning the rudder, I tape the wood down. Now my rudder is "fixed" to perfect alignment. I can now set the cables/peddles to a perfectly aligned rudder without the rudder moving. Hope this helps.

kicbacmaui,

I have the instructions from John Foti on cable replacement. It's step by step and very easy to follow. I will try to post it here as a MS Word file as soon as I get home. If that doesn't work, send me your email address and I'll emial it directly to you.

Hey Raphael, that is exactly what I was looking for. When I replaced my cable the first time, I never received the "tie-off" loops needed for the correct replacement.(Won't tell you who I got it from) I do have the newer style and this is exactly what I needed!

Have Fun...Kicbacmaui!
