I could be way off, but…… is it just my imagination or do the paddlers that currently live in Hawai’i, or have in the recent past, have less interest in talking about the technical aspects of paddling, canoe design and innovations than those who live outside the Islands? Why is that? Its obviously not for lack of knowledge……….I just dont get it.

They don’t have time for it. Conditions are too good for paddling. :)

I don’t know where YOU’VE been hanging out, but in the parking lot in front of Kamanu Composites the other night, there was so much “technical” canoe talk going on, I had it coming out my a$$.

…just like usual.

…and that’s a SCIENTIFIC FACT!

Dearest Mister AQ65.

Why do you feel the need to alienate your entire paddle pulling brethren in Hawaii? Perhaps you would like to rethink your train of thought on your close minded post above.

People in Hawaii love paddling, and love each other, but at this point most definitely do not love you. Except for me that is. I love any great man who fiends for aqua so much that he is superior to all the hot manbodies in Hawaii.

If your manpart is anywhere as big as your ego sounds above, we haaaaave to meet.

Love to all, and to all some good lovin’. Peace, love, and joy to everyone in the water!!

It is a Hawaii thing. It is tough to understand or get it.

In Hawaii we probably watch less CNN and C-Span too. Maybe even read less books.

But we will live an extra 6 years due to less stress and maybe not worrying about the technical aspects.

Please don’t confuse that with lack of sophistication or knowledge-it is just communicated in other ways like “talking story” or experiential learning.

For example the knowledge behind picking opihi or diving for octupus is huge. An understanding of tides, currents, winds, ocean, reef, habitat, etc. is needed. But all of that isn’t necessarily written down or will every be written down “technically” It is by feel too.

It is all about the feel.

aqua, I politely urge you to reconsider your recent post. I am not sure you understand the underlying meaning in your sentiment. I fear for your personal safety, some Hawaii readers may find your post offensive and derogatory. We all have wonderful spirits and I know deep down in my warm beating heart you did not mean any harm but it will be interpreted as such. I assure you that you do not want to upset the locals here, they approach arguments much like their paddling. Few words and more physicalness.

I am so happy for this wonderful website. I hope we all can enrich each others lives in great ways.

Aloha Aqua,
i know you never had no second story behind your question, and this topic interested you honestly. all i can speak about is, as always, because my personal experience:
I’am not Hawaiian, i am an Argentinian that lived in Oahu, Hawaii for 7 years, I paddeled for Haleiwas Manu o ke Kai Canoe Club, and i can relate a lot to what KONA J said about “the feel”, while i was there.you are simply connected, and if you need help, your Ohana take cares of it, talking stories, at practice, at any reagatta, race, what eva, the interaction and the feedback are an everyday thing, thats Kokua, and thats the Aloha Spirit right? and thats how everybody share knoledge and get better in any field.

when i came back and started introducing Outrigger here, that was a hold different ball game, i came across a lot of obstacles, and thats when i started loging in, google, forums, webs, etc etc, cause i was on the other side of the world by myself starting something from scratch. so my way to talk stories and to stay tune is by these ways.

i don´t know if my experince maybe helps to answer your question, but in my humble perspective i think that maybe us guys who lives far away, and cannot interact that fluent, most likely we will spend more time in front of the computer doing what in Haleiwa i would have been doing at the KAMANI LOUNGE in the Canoe site.

Aloha.

So let me get this straight………….
The guy who represents Hawai’ian paddling to the world with the name of poopoopaddler and an avatar pic of a big steamy turd is accusing me of disrespecting the Hawai’ians and threatening me? I specifically said…..”its obviously not for lack of knowledge”.
Point being the Hawai’ian paddlers have more to offer than most which is why I dont understand why they dont share more about something that they are not only knowledgable about, but its something that is a part of who they are. You may wanna watch your back poo, and change your name and pic, cuz the local bra’s may not be appreciating how you disrespect them.
Thanks KonaJ for the straight up answer……that makes sense. And I never for a second thought that there was a lack of sophistication or knowledge……on the contrary, I know its superior and thats why I dont understand why guys like poo are the dominant representatives on this forum. It would be cool though if some were to share more of the knowledge and traditions. I know there are alot of people who would love to know.
