Iaorana Hiro,

What's happening with Shell? They've already lost the ABC Cup and now the Rangiroa Channel. I saw the photos of the ABC Cup and with the exception of David Tepava steering and Lucien Tara, I did not see any of the famous faces like Karyl Maoni, Roland, Jimmy Pirato, Moana Mairau, and even Bruno Tauhiro who apparently went back to Shell this year.
What are the comments in Tahiti in regards to this healthy competition between OPT and Shell?

In fact Shell hit OPT A canoe and broke their own ama... They had to stop paddling to change their ama in the ocean. After that they came 2nd... not so bad !

Thanks Hiro C.

The photos made it look like it was pretty flat maybe 2 to 3 foot.

OPT team wins 1st Rangiroa-Tikehau outrigger canoe race

(Tahitipresse) - Two of the top outrigger canoe teams in Tahiti—the OPT and Shell—finished first and second respectively over the weekend in the first "Rangiroa Channel Hoe" race of some 80 km (50 miles) between two Tuamotu atolls.

The OPT team is made up of employees of the French Polynesia Office des Postes et Télécommunications. The Shell team is made up of employees of the Shell Oil Co. operating in French Polynesia.

There were 17 canoes on the starting line at Rangiroa. The race ended on the neighboring atoll of Tikehau. Among the spectators for this outrigger canoe racing first was French Polynesia President Gaston Tong Sang.

Tong Sang and his government's Sports Minister Clarenntz Vernaudon, Public Works Minister Louis Frébault, Sea Minister Temauri Foster and Archipelago Development Minister Otime Teura took advantage of their official visit to the Tuamotu Archipelago to take in the race.

The 17 canoe teams included several from Tahiti in an operation similar to the older and much bigger Hawaiki Nui event, an annual outrigger canoe race held between the Leeward Islands of Huahine, Raiatea, Taha'a and Bora Bora. This race, attracting more than 100 canoes, will be held this year from Oct. 29-31
