Outrigger Canoe Paddlers rescued 14 miles off Maui.

Upon reading the news this morning, I have became interested in just who, how and why this occured. Just checking in to understand what the paddlers were doing in the early morning hours. I understand they were equipped with life jackets and radio. Were they attempting to cross the channel. Where did they launch from? Where were they going?

It is my understanding it was a double hull, I think a sailing canoe. They were coming from the big island on their way to maui for the canoe festival. This was the canoes maiden voyage.

How stubid can you be when you are crossing a channel, especially that channel..in those high winds and sea with no escort boat?

I am not sure where in the big island they set off from, I did hear they were coming across to go to the canoe festival in Lahaina.

All I know, To cross that channel when there are small craft warnings out with no escort boat..is STUBID. They are lucky noone was killed.

I heard on the news the coast guard said they did everything they were suppose to..HELLO..NO THEY DIDNT, THEY HAD NO ESCORT..Good lesson.

At least they had all their safety gear. I wish they would tell us what happened. It is a lesson for all, no matter how good you THINK you are..Mother nature is better! Be smart, stay safe!

So those Polynesians that voyaged all over the Pacific in sailing canoes for hundreds of years sans escort boats were stupid?

Take it easy thomas. we don't know all the facts and, if we did, you may (or not) start bashing them on the internet. They don't need that. I'm sure they have already evaluated the situation and will take the needed precautions.go scold somebody else, like your kids or your dog

Hold on there mc2! Now I'm scolding YOU for scolding thomas, for scolding the canoe-sailors. You're right - we DON'T know all the facts. Maybe thomas doesn't even HAVE kids or a dog. Also, maybe he's NEVER made a mistake, or done something risky in his entire life, which WOULD entitle him to scold those sailors.

now now people..First off I am hawaiian. Back in the day, the hawaiians knew when to go and knew when not to go..All I am saying is, in todays world..You have more choices. If you have ever crossed that channel, you would know it is one of the most dangerous channels in the world..So to do a crossing in THAT channel on a super windy day with no escort..again is STUBID!

Doesnt matter what happened, or how they went down..The mistake they made was trying to cross the alenuihaha channel in those conditons in TODAYS world, with no escort boat!

I agree with all of you..We need to hear what happened and also put safety first. I have sailed that channel many times and it can be brutal, especially in high winds.

My heart and Aloha go out to the crew.

Undeniably the smartest thing they did was bring safety equipment. Life jackets, radio, etc. I paddle with a small fanny pack that includes an inflatable life jacket, a personal locator beacon and misc. safety equip. Good job on that!
