New Boats

With all respect to boat builders and new canoes coming out, i hate to tell all u bloggers this but i think if someone came out with any design or new kind of boat with a half decent look and good paint job. All of us would freak out and want to know about it and immediately buy one no matter good or not just because its new and everyone wants that new boat.

Submitted by ryan d on Wed, 05/14/2008 - 2:54pm

Ryan you have a point....it happened to me last year. Got a new boat based on other people's feedback without spending any time in the boat unfortunately as no one had one for me to demo where I live at the time. Yes it was a new model and the paint quality and build quality was very good (I won't mention the brand or model), but the boat was too heavy and didn't move well for me. I compared GPS readings and time trials for months against my old ride.

My 3 yr old ride was better, faster and lighter in all conditions for me and given I had it for 3 yrs already I knew it was built well. I learned a very good lesson last year as a result. Never buy a boat on other people's recommendation alone....star paddlers or not. Stay away from the Hype until you have had enough saddle time to know how well a new boat works for you in your water.

Whatever boat you paddle, does the boat really matter anyway ?

When I started paddling I used a 15 ` aluminum Grumman and I was in hog heaven with that boat. The fun and memories gained from paddling that canoe are priceless.

Same is true today , no matter what you`re favorite canoe maker is.

So , go paddle , have fun , get fit and fight obesity at every opportunity......

"Whatever boat you paddle, does the boat really matter anyway ?"

So you just spent the last year cramming OC boats down everyone's throat with the subtlety of a hand-grenade, but now say that the boat doesn't matter. (?)

I feel confused and vulnerable.

#5 Thu, 05/15/2008 - 5:38am

When confused you can do several things. Sell it, paddle it moor, maybe its a lemon and bring it back, maybe the canoes not the problem, I like to have 3 canoes a flat water canoe a big water canoe and a training canoe, you cane beat up, and will make you a champ, and make you hate it . Mine is called ( Yogi ). it will break you. it weighs more than a double. the kids tell stories about it. if I was going into battle I would want Yogi by my side. not one of them sissy canoes. Yogi stands alone.

Thats right , the boat doesnt matter .

Good times can be had on the ocean on any boat , what a revelation ,

This is from the new , kinder , gentler Fuzerider .

If I used to come across with the sublety of a hand grenade , I apologize.

#7 Thu, 05/15/2008 - 7:20am

Stop f**king with me, will ya?! The boat doesn't matter? An apology?

Are you TRYING to kill the fun of this forum? Play your part correctly or you're out of the club.

#8 Thu, 05/15/2008 - 7:33am

Are you saying you want to hear from the old Fuzerider?

Your old friend , whom youll soon miss bigtime if I dont switch back??

#9 Thu, 05/15/2008 - 7:39am

Well lets see, when you spend 3500$ on a new boat.....yes it does matter which boat you paddle :-) though they are all nice to paddle in.

Its great to take a laid back 'Just Paddle and Enjoy' approach, that is why I have four boats. Some are for play and fun and other things.

247365 - Its not about anger at all, its about finding a ride that makes you smile when you are racing hard and exhausted and when you just want to get out and play hard on the fun bumpy days.

Like finding a good pair of shoes you never want to get rid of.

i think when people buy a new oc1 they think it will make them go faster.
it doesnt.!
If you put kai in a bathtub, he'll win the race.
buying a canoe should be about fittiing you and what it will be used for

#11 Thu, 05/15/2008 - 8:59am

Kai's damn good, but a bathtub? I think we're going a bit to far on that one... I don't think it'd even stay upright or float for that matter.

Wow this is interesting, don't you guys see now why we heckle anyone who asks what boat is the best? And all we caught crap for it. Haha

Anyway, can you guys help me figure out how to get enough $$ to buy a Pueo? I think thats the most recent boat and I'd like to buy one. Hopefully by the time I get enough money together a newer boat won't come out so I don't have to change my mind again. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Save your money a little longer, soon the "RAPTOR" is going to be introduced.

Remember , you heard it here first on OCPaddler.com

"buying a canoe should be about fittiing you and what it will be used for"

I want to use it for winning. Where do I buy that one?

#14 Thu, 05/15/2008 - 10:20am

I get a little tired of everyone saying that the boat doesn't matter, and that it is the engine not the boat. The boat does matter, Do I think there is one fastest boat? No, They are all fast, and all have different abilities in different conditions, and with different riders. If all you are doing is paddling for fun and exercise than what boat you choose may not matter as much, But if you are in a club that sits there crews by OC-1 time trials, than the boat can be a big issue, For me a Hurricane will be the fastest boat, In a 15 minute all out effort on flat water the difference from riding my Hurricane or my Fuze can be as much as 30-45 seconds. In that time there may be several paddlers that I beat on my Hurricane and loose to on my Fuze. This could take me from the A boat to the B boat. Time on the water is obviously the key to getting fast. Picking the right boat is also key, I Love my Hurricane for it's speed, I hate the seat and the ama, oh yeah the rudder sucks in kelp as well, But it is fast for me, Opposite is true for the Fuze, Love the seat and ama, It is not as fast in flats, but runs great in bumps and I am more comfortable.
For each individual there will be a fastest boat, and what works for Danny or Jr, may not work for me or you. If thinking you will be faster because Kai or Mael is on a specific boat, then great. That is one part of the process of getting the boat that is best for you.

Disclaimer- Yes I am a dealer, But please EVERYONE I am NOT affiliated with Fuzerider. This post is NOT intended to be a plug or free advertising for anything or anyone, I just get sick and tired of everyone saying it is not the boat, The boat does make a difference. For some a little others a lot. I am not saying if you pick the right boat you will win, But you may move up a crew or beat your buddy.

#15 Thu, 05/15/2008 - 10:28am

" Speed is important , but fun is mandatory"

Anyone who gets too far from this simple truth misses much.

Besides , no one here on ocpaddler is stupid , we all know that Kaimana is fastest in California when Danny `s paddling .

Zephyr is fastest in Hawaii when Jr,. is paddling.
Fusion is fastest on east coast when Jr. is here visiting.
Fusion is fastest in Australia when Jr. is there visiting.

When Lauren Bartlett races on her Pegasus , who `s going to keep up with her ? Nobody. not any time soon.

If Lauren where on a Fuze the results would be even more dramatic due to the Fuzes chine effect.

This is not an advertisement and I`m in no way affiliated with Ocean Ohana.

Total commitment to one manufacturer doesn`t involve selling more than one brand of canoe.

http://maineoutriggerchampionships.blogspot.com/

#16 Thu, 05/15/2008 - 12:21pm

Oh, puhleeeeez, everybody knows its how well the boat was repaired that makes it fastest.

#17 Thu, 05/15/2008 - 12:15pm

ok this getting a little heated and i did not mean for this to happen
all i wanted to show is that everyone needs to stop worrying abut equipment and other misc. items and just go put in some miles

#18 Thu, 05/15/2008 - 12:22pm

lauren would go slower on a fuse as chines have nothing to do with speed. And that is a scientific fact!! Plus she has the Pegasus wired. Don't mean to hurt Fuzeriders feelings but chines suck. Why build the Raptor so fast after just introducing the Zephyer- can only Karel Jr. make it work? I feel sorry for all the Fusion, Fuze and Zephyer riders - now they'll have to buy a new boat!

#19 Thu, 05/15/2008 - 1:09pm

Some of you "kids" must have heard of the story "The Wind In the Willows".
It's a children's book and been made into a movie or two and occasionally you run across the short version of the following quote (just the first sentence) because it applies generally to all aspects of "boating".

However, when I read all that passes for "communication" on this whole site, I often try to recall this version because it fits some of the BS on here like a custom triple stitched cover (with locking zippers) ! (I had to search on line for it because its long and the brain cells are going, going... There goes (paste!):

"There is nothing--absolutely nothing--half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats. In or out of 'em, it doesn't matter. Nothing seems really to matter, that's the charm of it. Whether you get away, or whether you don't; whether you arrive at your destination or whether you reach somewhere else, or whether you never get anywhere at all, you're always busy, and you never do anything in particular; and when you've done it there's always something else to do, and you can do it if you like, but you'd much better not."

I think the "never get anywhere at all" covers the "what's the best boat exchanges" (especially the "chines" posts) on here to a "t" handled paddle. You all take care. Watch out for those coral heads if you are lucky enough to have to dodge those where you are! Mahalos.

#20 Thu, 05/15/2008 - 1:45pm

ryand, why put in all those long hard miles with a new boat will make me faster? Get with it!

Poopopp

#21 Thu, 05/15/2008 - 2:11pm

A fitting boat matters probably as much as a fitting bike matters.

#22 Thu, 05/15/2008 - 4:02pm

poops are you talking about a placebo effect?
Today I visited heaven and they were building my "placeboat".
Funny thing was that the owners call heaven actually Kamanu Composites.

#23 Thu, 05/15/2008 - 4:08pm

McFuze, you are not serving the cause of oc paddling by pushing those boats the way you do. Take a page out of my man Ocean ohana's book, rep some other boats, and stop misleading those who may be unaware. I sincerely hope you aren't that full o' shit when you're selling boats in person.

#24 Thu, 05/15/2008 - 5:48pm

Not at all Jimbo , Here at ocpaddler we all need to remember that this is an annonymous posters forum . All kinds of sarcasm , wit , truth , satire , real stories all get mixed together here.
To me that`s what makes ocpaddler fun and interesting .

Take for example poopoopaddler. Who `s posts would you rather read his, or seriouspoopoopaddler? I prefer poopoopaddler anyday over seriouspoopoopaddler.

Anyone whos seeking actual facts that pertain to a boat they want to buy shouldnt be looking for those facts on an annonymous forum . Those people should go straight to the manufacturers and dealers directly ,not through a public forum.

Paddlers tend to be very smart , savy, on the ball kinds of people . I think they know tongue in cheek humor when they see it .

Does anyone here want to hear from seriousfuzerider?
If so , I`ll demonstrate......

GEAR IS FUN. This is entertainment. Since reading about aquafriends california rudder, I am excited and entertained about getting a rudder that will keep some of the crap from getting stuck when I cruz around. I am excited to see if I can go a little faster without my giant fusion rudder which I dont need. I am excited to meet danny ching, take lessons, get on a Kamanu boat and see if that has better oc-1 farfegnugen, about putting some stupid polish on my hull that wont make me go faster but.....but it is fun, new paddles, gps's. Oh yea, dont underestimate the placebo effect...black with gold speckles.

IF THERE WAS an oc-1 store where I could buy different rudders, new pain retardant custom seats, exotic paddles, composite parts I would have sunk a lot of $$$ and had a lot of fun in the process. I used to spend 200$ a week on booze, why not?

weather a red dot site for your pistol or some new ultralight camping gear, this is good clean fun. Bring on the chines

#26 Fri, 05/16/2008 - 1:40am

Shawn Michael,

Seriousfuzerider here, If you are needing a small flatwater rudder for your Fusion ,I have just what you need .

I can`t sell it to you directly because you live in Ocean Ohanas selling territory and we respect each others space.

But, if you want a smaller rudder , have Chris buy it for you from me and I`ll get it right out .

Aloha Nui Loa .....

"Anyone whos seeking actual facts that pertain to a boat they want to buy shouldnt be looking for those facts on an annonymous forum . Those people should go straight to the manufacturers and dealers directly ,not through a public forum."

Fuze, that is such a sad statement for so many reasons.

Shawn, Ive been building custom one-off rudders. (Its really not much more work than making a plug, mold and then molding the damn things.) If youre interested, I have a couple rudders you could try out for a week or two, that fit most of the Kamanu canoes and some of the Outrigger Connection. PM me and Ill try to get 'em to you at one of the races.

#28 Fri, 05/16/2008 - 8:09am

Butt aid ,

I know inflection is hard to transmit in a text message but your remark had a touch of mean spiritedness in it. I wonder how many paddlers will enjoy taking thier canoe to be repaired by a mean person.

Good luck to you....

aquafiend said:

And for that "not much work" he'll charge you a measly fee of $250. What a bargain!

#30 Fri, 05/16/2008 - 10:07am

i love reading all the posts and heated debates, they're hilarious. I finally decided to check out fuzeriders link and I was wondering; if chines are so great, why are the two fuze riders in the photo getting their ass by three huricanes? aka round bottom boats.

#31 Fri, 05/16/2008 - 12:30pm

Nothing mean about it.........but it would be terribly sad if, as you suggest, there was no trust among tha paddling community. I disagree. Furthermore, we all know that a manufacturer is out for his own interest. Thats even understandable, seeing how they have a tremendous investment in thier product. I just think it unfair and dishonest of you to suggest that we would get 'better' info from the manufacturer than from our brothers and sisters. You wouldnt by any chance be biased would you?

Goto, if you thought $250 was a bargain, you'll be stoked to know that its actually $150 for a custom rudder, and only $125 if you provide the shaft......not that Im trying to market them here, just setting the record straight......but thanks for the opportunity to share:-)

#32 Fri, 05/16/2008 - 12:44pm

p.s. fuze (aka, short fuze) Im BoatAid, poo, my biggest fan, is buttaid:-)

They were giving the Hurricane rider a head start to make it fair. ;)

aquafiend, to set the record straight, I am far from your biggest fan. In fact, whatever you would call the complete opposite of a biggest fan, thats what I am to you. Don't flatter yourself.

goto was talking about a previously advertised rudder that costed $250. He has his facts straight.

Poopooo

#35 Fri, 05/16/2008 - 1:32pm

I`ve got the genuine oc rudders anyway, hand crafted by genuine Chinese guys in China.

I won`t sell them outside my own selling territory until I get the go ahead from Ocean Ohana .

http://maineoutriggerchampionships.blogspot.com/

#36 Fri, 05/16/2008 - 2:13pm

Thats not how I remember it poo......
The way I remember it was they were "about" $250, including a kelp cutter that went infront of the rudder, and it included installation, which means delrinn washers and a stainless nut, plus tuning.
Also remeber you being interested.

#39 Fri, 05/16/2008 - 6:19pm

rudderless all the way!

#40 Fri, 05/16/2008 - 8:55pm

agreed to the 2 above, now if only i could get the friggin thing to go in a straight line while paddling on the right.

Hiro C, suggestions?

#42 Sat, 05/17/2008 - 5:16pm

Hmm...It's a nice day for a paddle

Hey Boat Aid do you have anything made up to change the seat of the Hurricane. Great boat but the seat is an injury in the making.

#43 Sat, 05/17/2008 - 5:45pm

Thanks Hiro C, see you at the Super Aito someday...most likely gonna be a few years though...

#44 Sat, 05/17/2008 - 6:30pm

No chance seeing me at the Super Aito...
Tahitian paddlers have to qualify for the Super Aito. The qualifying race, Te Aito, is held mid-july. You have to rank in the first 100's to qualify for the Super Aito ! Last year I came 332 out of 611... that's still 232 guys to overtake !
But we surely meet if you come to Hawaiki Nui.

#45 Sat, 05/17/2008 - 10:06pm

Aquafiend, get your sh$t straight man. I was the guy that said to pay me 100 bucks and I'll swim beside you and cut off the kelp myself. No wonder people don't like you, you're one sneaky dude.

Holy pot-calling-the-kettle-black, Batman!

Why didn't you want to put away the hate last week, when you were trying to rally the rest of OCP against poops, aqua?

#48 Sun, 05/18/2008 - 9:36am

Is it my imagination or has the last week on OCP been the most vitriolic since the Hypr threads of a year ago or so. Usually I figure that the regulars are just kidding with each other, but this just goes on and on.
I'm going paddling. I suggest everyone does the same. And if I see any of you out there, I'm going to kick your asses.

#49 Sun, 05/18/2008 - 11:03am

Yeah , time to cease hostilities , at least until the next battle ensues.

I got 4 .5 hours of Fuze time today , getting ready for Blackburn .

You people should show up and race this year .

You`re not a man until you race Blackburn ....

If you dont show up it can only mean youre affraid to race Fuzerider.... ;)

#50 Sun, 05/18/2008 - 11:13am

You`re not a man until you race Blackburn ….

You just insulted about 99.999% of the world's paddling men. You know why? Because no one goes to Maine to paddle. I give you credit for paddling in the frigid north, but I can't ever imagine spending money to go there. When I drop money to paddle, its Hawaii.

I was feeling left out of the hostility-sharing.

#51 Sun, 05/18/2008 - 11:50am

When I drop money to paddle, its Hawaii.

Me too , but Blackburn is close to home and it`s good east coast racing .

New England `s pretty nice in Summer .

The Blackburn Challenge is in Massachusetts, e. New England is a beautiful place to be in the summah! Mark it down for next year. Fresh Lobster, corn-on-the-cob, fried clams all washed down w/ ice cold Molson's. Take a visit to God's Country, get yourself some culcha!

Thats freaken sweet, "OCP Mafia" How do I get to be in that? Do I have to bust in on twenty forms and let loose a couple of outlandish comments.

How bout, "You guys should go buy a new boat."
No that sucks how bout, "You guys should go buy a new rudder."
No that sucks as well how bout, "You guys should go train harder."
That really sucks how bout, "You guys should all shut up."

That still sucked, but oh well I guess I'm just not that good at this.

#60 Sun, 05/18/2008 - 7:09pm

Yeah ! I would like to have the "OCP Maffia" T-shirt...

#61 Sun, 05/18/2008 - 8:50pm

Is someone going to photoshop a OCP MAFIA t shirt for us to look at?

#62 Mon, 05/19/2008 - 2:59am

I`ll make the OCP Mafia t shirts , maybe get permission to use the "Mad Gringo" Logo to go with it .

This is starting to smell gay.

#65 Mon, 05/19/2008 - 4:46am

way ahead of you there boys. team ocp was at the kauai world challenge.

alt text

btw we did make sure and ask keizo for permission. the lightning was a little artistic license on goto's part though.

#66 Mon, 05/19/2008 - 4:50am

Which begs the question: how will the ocpaddler.com Molokai Hoe Team be chosen? Post volume/quality? Time trials? Cronyism? Evening gown competition?

#67 Mon, 05/19/2008 - 5:15am

Jim
I don't think that paddling ability is a criteria. The evening gown competition is an interesting idea, but only if we have to wear them during the race. Is it possible to do changes wearing a formal gown? We may have to iron it (the race, not the gown).

#68 Mon, 05/19/2008 - 6:11am

Of course if Poops is coaching we'll all have to wear Depends.

#69 Mon, 05/19/2008 - 6:13am

a couple slogans to go with..........

OCP Mafia......"we're serious about not being serious"

or..........."takes us serious, but not paddling"

btw, Tpoppler01, membership is pretty easy. You just have to murder a few good threads and you're in

hahahahaha..........
