Epic Race - Who's signed up to race in the OC1 event?

Who's signed up for the Epic race? Who's gonna win? Predictions? What guys from Tahiti are racing??

Submitted by rflemer on Fri, 05/16/2008 - 5:13am

There are 118 surfskis and 27 OC1s entered in the race. Most of the top international paddlers are here for the surfski division, including Lewis Laughlin and a few other Tahitians. Most of the top OC1 paddlers were in the PAA race, with a large number of the 27 OC1 paddlers in Epic's race those from out of State who had already made reservations etc. before PAA's race was announced.

I did NOT sign up. That should help through elimination.

It would be nice to have a website with a list of entrants but just from who I know is entering, I hedge on a battle between Herman Chalupsky, Dawid Mocke, Zsolt Szadovszki, and Oscar Chalupsky. Oscar's using the ultra light 7 kg V10. On the women's side, Katie Pocock of NZ but if weather conditions dramatically change with huge swells, Maggie Twigg-Smith should be up there.
I'm hoping Mark Sandvold, Sean Monahan, and Stu Gaessner will be up there as well. ~ pray for wind ~

Pretty good analysis, but you left out Hank McGregor, Tim Jacobs, Dean Gardiner, and Lewis Laughlin for the men. On the women's side Alexa Lombard Cole is very good, and my bet would be on Lauren Bartlet.

Is Lauren racing? That would be something - for her to win the Surfski and the OC-1 in the same year. Has anyone else done that male or female in a solo during their career - I think Kelly Fey accomplished that during her racing days but not too sure. If Lauren is in fact going to race, I have to give her a big advantage over Katie Pocock having crossed the channel so many more times. Honestly, I don't know how Hank McGregor, Alexa Cole and Tim Jacobs fare amongst the field, and I definitely respect Dean Gardiner and Lewis Laughlin's talent. Lewis Laughlin is simply amazing.

Hmmm .... www.ocpaddler.com. After reading all the responses I thought I was on www.surfski.com. I'll try again .... who is going to win the "OC1" competition this weekend???

#10 Fri, 05/16/2008 - 6:33pm

Karel. Kai. Danny and Manny. On any given day any one of them could win. On Sun. well, throw the cards up in the air and let them fall where they may....................................

Hmmm...you wrote:

These questions say to me, in general, who's racing and who's going to win...nothing about what they are riding. AND, althouth this site IS primarily for OC1, Keizo doesn't exclude Surfskis over OC1s...never has. AND, the whole reason for the Pa'a Molo Solo and the Epic Molo Solo is to grow the two sports by highlighting each of them individually.
Since there are about 125 Surfski entrants and only about 25 OC1s entered...the more logical answer to your original question would be in reference to a Surfski.
Mikala
ps In reference to OC1 male contenders, I have only heard of Danny Ching signing up for the race in the OC1 division but there maybe more.

Hey everyone
Word from the race course is that Lauren IS doing the surfski division today and she is killing it! My husband was looking for his male Tahitian surfski paddler after the start of the race and there she was...in front of his male paddler and many others. She is awesome!
By the way, the tradewinds are back but not very helpful for the paddlers. So the vog is not as thick but it is hot! Also, my husband thinks the tide is really not very favorable today.
Just some info about the race...it started about 1/2 hour ago @ 9am.

Race Update:
They are currently about 19 miles from O'ahu. The surfski division is being dominated by the S. Africans. The OC1 men's division is a tight battle between Mark Frazer and Danny Ching. They are both on the same line and Ching is currently a bit ahead.
Lauren looks to be the first surfski female. She is running south of the Tahitian guy that Norm is escorting today (she is even with him).
That's the latest.

I remember that after last year's event, Chalupsky said the '08 event would have a huge cash prize list. Did anything come of that?

#17 Sun, 05/18/2008 - 11:53am

$10K is what I read on the Epic site. $3K for first place (OC1 or Surfski) + $7K bonus if on an epic surfski.

#18 Sun, 05/18/2008 - 12:01pm

#24 Sun, 05/18/2008 - 1:40pm

Isn't he usually among the top local surfskiers?

#25 Sun, 05/18/2008 - 1:42pm

Congratulations to Lewis Laughlin.
I remember reading last year that he had a lucky win... Well his luck striked twice !

Lewis Laughlin=Amazing

10 Time Super Aito Winner and 2-Time back to back Molokai Solo Ski Champion. Super Aito and Ski Champion in same year. I bet that will never be repeated. I wish a couple of companies would sponsor him more, because, if any paddler needs over the top sponsoring, it is him.

If he needs seat for Molokai Hoe this year, my club will take him. ;)

He is also a good role-model for this forum. As some other paddlers were commenting about the anger and venom (I am no saint either) that is expressed at times in this forum. Before posting we should step back and ask ourselves. "What Would Lewis Do?

#28 Sun, 05/18/2008 - 2:32pm

No doubt.

#29 Sun, 05/18/2008 - 2:34pm

Saw Mael at the State HS boys v-ball championship last night(Sat) where Iolani took down Punahou. States were on Maui this year. He said he was not going to be racing!

#30 Sun, 05/18/2008 - 2:43pm

sean monahan and sue brown are about to, or just have had their first child - a baby girl, some things are actually more important than paddling!

congratulations to Lewis on a great race - 1:30 into the race and he just SURFED those small bumps and left everyone else in the dust, from our vantage point on the escort boad he looked relaxed, smooth and powerful the whole way!

#31 Sun, 05/18/2008 - 2:49pm

He has also won Molokai Hoe three times...
- in 1993 and 1994 with Piroguiers de Faa'a (with Hawaians steerers),
- in 2002 with Ra'i. Lewis was the steerer that year.

#32 Sun, 05/18/2008 - 3:10pm

Kai, Jr., Georges Cronsteadt, Karyl Maoni, Danny, Manny, Maui, Kea and so on. I'm sure if you took a poll of all the top guys they'd all pretty much agree that Lewis is world's top all-around ocean paddler.

Earlier post, I said Lewis Laughlin is simply amazing - I take that back - He is God! Defending his title! =)

Lauren Spaulding Bartlett is Goddess =D Having come in first in both the OC-1 and Surfski!

It was great to see Danny Ching entering and winning this race as well for the OC-1 division and getting a good look at the Pueo moving on water, a beautiful canoe indeed! I definitely missed not seeing Karel, Manny, Kea and a lot of the other OC-1 ppls.

Congratulations to all who entered, especially those international athletes and from the states who have to pay the travel expenses etc. to get here and participate in this event, making it as big as it is today!

#35 Sun, 05/18/2008 - 8:07pm
