i like to use the worst tasting thing out there. me and a few buddies of mine think the things that taste the nastiest are usually the best for you. so in our case, hammer products.

Here's a receipe for Home Made HEED designed by a Sports Doctor who paddles and i trust his word..

Home made HEED:

I'm assuming the recommendation of 2.5 scoops of HEED per hour which works out to about 600-700 cc per hour. Endurolytes are also roughly recommended at the same 2-3 scoops per hour. Therefore, you can mix a liter at a time conveniently, and that is what is most convenient to use for comparison.

For the calories (kcal) use maltodextrin. This Maltodextrin container in the link has 63 (1/2 cup) servings and is on sale for pretty cheap, about half off (see link below),

http://www.iherb.com/store/ProductDetails.aspx?c=Herbs&pid=NOW-02023

add this to get the equivalent of HEED with 4 scoops of endurolytes per liter.

6 1/4 teaspoons of table salt - (pure sodium chloride)
1 teaspoon of Morton Lite salt (combo of sodium chloride and potassium chloride)
12 Tums tablets of the 300 mg Calcium per tablet strength
Kool Aid packets? I added 6 packets of UNSWEETENED Kool Aid to see what it does. You can't taste it really. But, it does add color so that you know that the powder mix has already been doctored.

Save your scoop that came with the HEED you bought. Then, 4 scoops of the mix per liter yields:
400 Kcal, 500 mg sodium, 64 mg potassium, 118 mg calcium. For comparison, HEED with 4 scoops per liter of endurolytes has 400 kcal, 500 mg sodium, 64 mg potassium, 124 mg calcium. HEED also has 16 mg B6, 4 mg Manganese, 100 mcg chromium polynicotinate, and three amino acids - L Carnosine 50 mg, L tyrosine 11 mg, glycine 31 mg. These latter are all of doubtful importance.

The mix is about 40 cents per liter vs HEED/endurolyte $2.80 per liter. Big difference if you would like to use the same mix for training and racing all year. I figure I will use about 1 liter per hour for endurance training with 300 hrs per year, so $120 for the homemade mix vs $840 for the HEED/endurolytes. That savings buys alot of beer!

Rambo
I'm a little unclear on your homemade HEED directions..do you add the portions of salts and Calcium to the entire container of Maltodextrin? I'm planning on trying this, very tired of paying lots of $$$ for what can be so easily made at home.

Yes, the quantities listed are added to the entire container of Maltodextrin which weighs 7LB.

You can verify that by calculating the calcium in each tablet.

Also, If you want Magnesium (which is not really needed) in the same amount as in HEED, add 1700 mg to the whole 7 lb bottle. (it will only come out to about 6-10 tablets). It might be an easier task to buy a small bottle of Magnesium at Walmart or somewhere and add the crushed pills to the mix.

Rambo,

Have you used that homemade mix to good effect? I would imagine so, but I was just wondering...

And how long have you been using it? How long has your doctor friend been using it?
