Maui Canoe & Kayak Club – 2004 Ocean Racing Series – Race 8 – Maliko
The hana hou on our Maliko run was a BLAST! We awoke to the sound of wind blowing through our windows – a good sign. Loaded the trailer and headed for registration. There was lots of help today and things ran very smoothly.
It’s a good thing when you are paddling to the start line at a Maliko race and you see the others, then you don’t see them, then you see them, then you can’t see them, ahh waves, surf, rides, fun. Of course this may also stir feelings of fear and uneasiness especially for those comfortable in flat water. No matter what the beginning feelings are, at the end, it is a feeling of accomplishment for all who finish. For those who experienced equipment trouble or got hit by an unexpected set, the boat ride to the finish line can be long and torturous as we all prefer to be paddling the course and riding those waves.
A big Maui welcome to all the paddlers from New Zealand and Canada and to our Moloka`i `ohana. First place overall went to Paul Wilford from Takapuna Canoe Club in Auckland. We are excited to have you all for the upcoming Starbucks Maui Challenge. Also Mahalo to Rick & Zoe Nu`u for their promotion of the Maui events and coordinating arrangements for our guests from across the seas.
The race course proved to be fast for the local hometown paddlers as top winners in the men and women’s OC-1 divisions went to the Hawaiian paddlers: Mike Giblin, JB Guard, Rick Nu`u, George Dagan, Dane Ward, Margie Kawaiaea, and Zoe Norcross-Nu`u. The paddleboards welcomed Ralph Sifford to the series and he was the fastest today. They remain our heroes.
We are truly grateful for the kindness expressed by the Maui paddlers and appreciate the beautiful leis, and gift certificates you all gave us. We will most definitely enjoy ourselves when we use the gift certificate to Tri Star Restaurants – perhaps after the Kaiwi relay we’ll dine at Aaron’s at the top of Ala Moana.
Maui paddlers are No Ka `Oi.
