I saw costco had a waterproof housing with waterproof headphones.

I could live inside Costco forever.

If they set up an above ground pool in the store you could paddle there. Maybe they would pay you to demo the waterproof headphones.

preach it, poops.

#4 Fri, 06/13/2008 - 1:03pm

the place is big enough, what if you built a huge trough across the whole store. You could have a pretty good long run like that.

another electronics question. what kind of heart rate monitors are y'all using? i'd like to keep it simple, and affordable. but not a piece of poo(poo).

forerunner 305.

HR plus GPS which has all kinds of goodies. Speed pace distance and the such.

You can graph speed and HR on the same graph when u DL data to computer. Sweet piece of electronics.

If you want something cheaper, get any HR monitor that straps to your chest. Polar makes many. Less than 80 bones. The forerunner will run you 200-300 bones but it worth every damn penny.

I haven't seen it at costco though. But i'd still live in that damn place.

...if you're into music on the water. And many aren't and will probably soon post such opposition here, which will lead to conflictive rhetoric about tradition vs. modern paddling, loss of aloha, the beauty of the ocean silence vs. balls-out paddling to death metal, etc.

Check out the icebar on otterbox.com for the 2nd generation nano. No headphones. I love it.

HR monitor: Garmin 305. Buy it at REI. Mine just broke after a year and a half and multiple hulis, walked into REI and said "it stopped working" they said "go get a new one", no questions asked!

I use an IPOD shuffle in a cheap roll up water proof baggie, and these headphones:

They have gotten plenty wet and still crank!

Bought the following for 79.99$ : iSH2 | Waterproof Headset for the iPod shuffle 2nd & 3rd Gen. You can find it here http://www.h2oaudio.com/shop/product.php?productid=41
it's waterproof up to 10', weight almost nothing and has a clear sound.
However I only listen to music when paddling on flatwater... in the surf you need your ears for balance and for listening the waves...

#12 Fri, 06/13/2008 - 7:06pm

tried using an ipod the other morning. nothing like some heavy metal at like 6 in the morning. If the earbuds hadn't fallen out it would have been great. I just used some I got from an airplane and put the ipod shuffle in a ziploc bag and taped it to my hat. Gonna get some cheaper headphones that won't fall out and try it again. won't ever use it in the surf though. what Hiro C. said is true. need your ears for waves and other boat traffic etc.

doesnt apple make a waterproof ipod now?

#14 Fri, 06/13/2008 - 8:16pm

speaking of costco... I just bought a $20 nike hr monitor there. Its worked pretty awesome for me so far.

How long does the battery last on those things. My cheapy only gives me an hour of music

#16 Sat, 06/14/2008 - 12:03am

The 305 is great because it gives you speed, distance, pace, heart rate, % of max, and will plot your run on a map. It is rechargeable, so no batteries to buy, and you can use it for hiking, and use to help you find your way back. I find it to be an amazing training tool (I'm still slow though).

#17 Sat, 06/14/2008 - 7:36am

the 305 is nice because you get instant feedback about what you are doing. if you change or tweak your technique, you instantly see if it is helping, hurting, making you work herder, etc. one more thing i noticed about the 305 is that the strap you wear has a little thingy you can open to remove/replace the battery. so the little mini bra thingy never does either.

plus the graphs and maps are cool to look at on your computer. not to mention
it keeps a running tally of all your training.

those clever garmin people...

I like to take a 52 inch plasma and a blender for mixed drinks w/ me while paddling oc1. I keep the pina colada mix in a little mini fridge behind the big screen.

#19 Sat, 06/14/2008 - 9:58am

I bought a Garmin E trex and the with the delay and the surge of the stroke the speed bounces around so much you really cant get anything out of it with you 7mph 3mph 6mph, 4mph and then the average speed for the trip on the other screen you have to paddle your ass off for a long time to get it to move tenth of a point...so I bought the wrong unit or is that how they all work?

Being without ears is a little sketchy....averted a few collisions with swimmers/rowers because I heard them

jim, did i mention i bring my laptop with me on the canoe? the next time i paddle in washington, i'll be expecting a fully stocked wet bar behind the steersman's seat.

#22 Sat, 06/14/2008 - 10:18am

As long as you say "Warshingtun" when referring to the Evergreen State. It's also the Evercold, everdamp, evergray state. 45 degrees this morning! Neoprene to da max in June! I'm going even more completely insane!! Actually, it's kinda sunny and 58 right now! Puget Sound swim, anyone?

#23 Sat, 06/14/2008 - 11:31am

112 here right now and the water is heating up. Paddling is first thing in the morning or in the evening. Just too hot during most of the day. Just wait till July and August when it warms up. What a relief to get to the beaches in SoCal.

#24 Sat, 06/14/2008 - 11:48am

SoCal is pretty hot now to, will be nice to get up to Washington in a few weeks. You gonna be at PNWORCA sprint champs jim?

#25 Sat, 06/14/2008 - 12:22pm

We don't really do too many sprints, nb, but if you're up here, maybe we'll jump in. Goto loves that shit-we'll send you back to Cali as PNWORCA champion!

#26 Sat, 06/14/2008 - 2:04pm

I'll see you there, already been talking with goto and think I got a boat worked out.

#27 Sat, 06/14/2008 - 2:19pm

now that's what i'm talking about, luke. i love you, costco.

#28 Sat, 06/14/2008 - 2:29pm

Gibsons is the meeting place for the OCP mafia.

#29 Sat, 06/14/2008 - 3:32pm

A beautiful spot for sure, but way too far north for most paddlers. I can barely get the Seattle guys up there!

#30 Sat, 06/14/2008 - 4:13pm

Hey, if I can can make the drive from AZ, no excuses for for anyone closer.

#31 Sat, 06/14/2008 - 5:32pm
