O'ahu regatta course length?

What length of course are you guys running on O'ahu? Here on the Big Island we're on a 1/4 mile course which makes for 3 turns in a mile race. Is that what is run at Ke'ehi for states?

For OHCRA - not sure if its the same for Hui Wa'a...

1/2 mile is the longest but there is a 1/4 mile lane flags as well.

The 1 mile races do one turn on the 1/2 mile flag.

The 1/2 mile races do one turn on the 1/4 mile flag.

The senior race is 1 1/2 mile and turn on the 1/2 mile flag then the 0 mile flag then back up to the 1/4 mile flag before going back to the 0 or start/finish flag

Hui Wa‘a also runs with a 1/2 mile course for the regular regatta season. If I remember correctly though, the last time State's was held at Ke‘ehi they reverted to a 1/4 mile course in order to fit more lanes in.

states at keehi will be a 1/4 course. No can fit 14 lanes of 1/2 mile.

So thats 5 turns in the senior race. Practice those turns baby!

Regatta races, make them shorter. There is no point in having a 1 and 1/2 mile senior race. There is also no point in having a mile masters race. WTF? I counted TEN masters events, while it is good to have events for every one of different ages, for god's sake, lets make them shorter, even a quarter mile sprint for some of them. I have been going to these races my entire @#!^& life, and they just seem to get longer.

I recognize HCRA, OCRA, ect goals of perpetuating the sport and culture as vital, but cant we seek those goals in a more rational and efficient way while at the same time recognizing the kinetic nature of any culture. Culture is not static.

Sorry, too much caffeine.

I agree with that - it seems to keep getting longer and I cant imagine as the later generations get even more fit, there will be 70's and over, 80's and over, 90's and over!

God bless there souls and I admire their fortitude but by then it should all just be quarter mile if we're going to accommodate all possible age groups =D

Just looking long term ;)

Having the senior race just 1 mile like the rest of the 'open' races would be fun to compare the times - Im sure their times will kill

There is no doubt that the Regattas are too long everywhere. Making races shorter is not a great time saving move, as it is the exchange and getting to the start line that takes up all the time. What most of the paddlers I have talked to think that dispensing with races is a better solution. Open 4 men and women as well as all of the mixed races should be eliminated. Those categories were formed a long time ago when classifications forced seniors out of paddling if they couldn't make the first crew. All of the clubs that participate in these races only would then be able to enter at least one upper division crew, taking those races from 3-5 entries to a full slate. I believe that would get rid of 10 events. Also cutting Novice A to one year would help to move more people into the upper divisions, as some Novice A paddlers have paddled Molokai, the Solo, etc. By definition they are not really novice.. Apparently somewhere along the line some of the clube were worried about paddlers not being able to make crews, so all of these extra events were added to accomodate them.

No Way! I love the open four race! It is a manly and masculine race for only the most virile and manly of men,,,,,,and women.
It is a great race for the bodybuilder/weightlifter types. Imagine four guys built like Andy Penny when he first came to Hawaii in the Open Four crew. That's what I'm talking about.

That is so funny -and so true about the open four - some of the guys racing in those races are Sherman tanks with the biggest guns!

I was part of an open 4 crew a long time ago and we won all of our races. It was fun, but then there were only about 20 events, and there were still one way moves up to senior and not back down. Open Four is fun, but why not Open Two like in the 40's and on and on. There could be an Open 4 Regatta and an all Mixed Regatta on a different day for those who like those races.

An open 4 in a 197 lb tahitian design canoe would be fun.

The senior race use to be 2 miles long when I was a keiki. I use to think, "Where did those canoes go?" when they would disappear TWICE down to the 1/2 mile flag. That race seemed to be an eternity! I love open 4 and the distance on the senior race is perfect. I do agree that some masters divisions could be culled down a bit. Masters, senior masters, golden masters, and now platnium masters along with all of the mixed divisions for those age groups seems a bit much. The real awesome thing about our sport is that I can paddle on the same day as my Mom (Platnium) and in a few years time maybe my son and daughter will be out there too. Three generations racing on the same day! Maybe a few less masters races but other than that, leave 'um!

I was told that once upon a California time, 1980's, they held an open 1 in an oc6 canoe...1/4 mile.
