Maui Canoe & Kayak Club-2004 Hurricane Ocean Racing Series
D.T. Fleming Beach, Maui to Kaunakakai, Molokai
Exhaustion, triumph, survival, relief, jubilation… the many emotions expressed by paddlers as they crossed the finish line at Kaunakakai in what seemed to have been a desert instead of the cool Pacific Ocean. The winds just didn’t wrap around Molokai so the final hour was brutal. Of course the rides in the channel and half way through the race were great but we sure could have used them in the final miles.
There were battles on that large playing field. Canoes were scattered in all directions, each trying to find the best line. We watched as Steve Blyth hunted down JB Guard and then himself became the prey of Matt Carter. These paddlers were working so hard, it was incredible to watch them. Kai Bartlett, the top surfskiers, Rick Nu`u & Mike Giblin were out of our line of sight in no time. We are sure they had a good battle themselves as they are separated by about 2 minutes between each place. We were thankful to be on an OC-2 with great partners, Rory Frampton and Andrea Moller. As you may imagine we are dedicating our races to Mark “Marko” Kawaiaea. We all miss him and hope he is recovering. Margie Kawaiaea proved her strength and determination as she was the first solo wahine to finish. We must give extra mention to all those paddlers who competed in the IVF trials in Hilo on Sat, flew to Maui and raced on Sunday. Awesome job.
Uncle Nappy Napoleon and Gaylord Wilcox walked away with the win in the 40+ relay division. It is no wonder they are legends, how do they do it? Uncle Nappy always makes it look easy. Unfortunately Kevin Kahikina & Bill Gassett from Virginia experienced a broken cable only 27 minutes into the race. Such a disappointment to come all that way and have equipment failure. They were able to experience the “bliss” of catching rides for a few brief minutes.
Maui Canoe & Kayak Club is very appreciative of all the competitors who made the journey to Maui. We are of course pleased with our Maui paddlers for the continued support of the race and for opening up their homes to competitors from around the world. We thank our Big Island `ohana for their enthusiasm and presence here. We send a big Mahalo to those from Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and Virginia. We are ever grateful for the kokua from our Moloka`i `ohana and enjoyed the added entries from Moloka`i. It was nice to have you all.
Welcome back to Paul Gay, Robin Cooper and Torrey Goodman and thanks for the kokua with the canoes.
Of great interest and honor for us were the entries from the surfski competitors. When people heard that Marshall Rosa was here there was an immediate buzz of excitement that spread throughout the surfski community. Brian Mulvaney, working from over the seas on our web site, we thank you for your hard work and all that you organize for the surfski competitors.
Starbucks was very generous to us and it was great to have their representative, Dan at the start. We thank Dan for his words of encouragement. The pastries, coffee, and prizes were fantastic. The shirt is awesome. MAHALO.
As always a great big Mahalo to Gail, Linda, Jenn, Keri, Kelli, & Michele for kokua with registration and results. We love our water patrol gang – Mahalo.
It has been a good season. Maui Canoe & Kayak Club has experienced a growth in members/competitors and races and we look forward to next year.
