Whats the Heaviest body of water that people are paddling?

It is generally accepted that the Molo channel is the Mecca of paddling and the preeminent "heavy" body of water to test ones abitities as well as establish the true "world champ" in the world of outrigger, just as Pipeline/The North Shore was and probably still is held as the heaviest surf. However, with waves like Teahupoo, the Box and many other freakish mutations that mere mortals can only gawk at, I was wondering.....JUST WONDERING, not trying to diss Molo or Hawai'i.......Whats the Heaviest body of water that people are paddling?

I bet it gets pretty nuts down in S. Africa. Roaring forties and all that. Out here off the coast of Washington is pretty crazy-not many paddlers out there, though. Brian Keaulana and the Quicksilver tow-in project guys did some of their training at Cape Disappointment to prepare for out-of-control cold stormy conditions.

I just did 13 miles south from Keokea. Its no Molo from what im told but supposed to be a good tune up. Ive heard that the gnarliest place on earth is at the southern tip of south africa. The 2 oceans coming together I guess makes incredible currents and swells as well as the fact that its loaded with sharks. Read that somewhere so I dont know if its true but it sounds good!

Surfski.info has some crazy stories about downwind runs in South Africa. Between the howling winds, cold water, and being chased by great whites, it sounds too radical for mere mortals.

jpi92109,

was the landing spot 3 miles down a safer way to get ashore?

Hawaiki Nui....hands down. No question. From spectators, to support, to the race its self, nothing can compare. Winner of Hawaiki Nui is truly World Champ. Although the waters itself does not compare to Hawaii, three straight days of marathon paddling makes this race second to none.

BTW....I live in Hawaii.

Jaws out......
