"you must have a hull, an ama, two iako, single bladed paddles, and no engines or pumps"

The title is directly quoted from jc9_0 in the "Tahitian design canoe". Im curious.....if those were the only rules, what might canoe design be and how would people try to misinterpret the rules?
For instance.....should the rules state "6 seats"?

Aquafiend, were you that kid in school that the teachers hated because you raised your hand and said "thats debatable" to everything stated in class?

Poops, you misunderstand me. I agree with jc9_0.
I just wanted to see what the "rules" might look like for an "unlimited/tahitian" class canoe. As jc9_0 stated it should be a hull, an ama, two iako and single blade paddles. The problem with having such simple rules is someone will inevitably find loop holes....i.e. someone will show up with an 8 seat canoe or an ama on each side or what ever. I think its apparent that sometime very soon the walls will come crashing down and there will be an open class canoe. I just thought it would be interesting, with all the experience and insight that resides, here, on OCP, that we could collectively create the rules, and ultimately, the canoe that we all want....and just as important, some weird hybrid that we dont.

Yeah I was just giving you a hard time. But I think the whole point behind the simple rules is just that. The ideas we're kicking around is to get away from too many rules. Thats the whole point of these discussions. HCRA has too many rules, which seems to be impeding canoe design, so lets make an association with as few as possible.

OMG.....I totally agree with poops! What is the world coming too? Could it be that the new canoe will usher in a new era of world peace and love and harmony?....:-)
Ok, so how does this sound?

"You Must Have a single Hull with six seats, A single Ama, Two Iako, Single Bladed Paddles, And No Engines Or Pumps"

I`d like to see automatic bailers being within the rules.

Anderson type work pretty good. :

'Automatic bailers' fantastic idea! - it would be the perfect way to get
around the 'no engines' rule.

Just have a hole in the bottom -- a loop hole that sit-on 'canoes' have
already created -- then connect a pump to this hole and pump the water out
through another hole to create a jet drive

Create a new sport all together if the rules of the current sport don't fit. After too significant change you might as well.

People are aware of what the rules are meant to be or stand for. Thus they respect the intent, not bend what is written to suit their agenda.
It's called tradition....In all history man has tried to progress and move the bar...it's all good. However, to move to far away from one's original identity, is to forget the historical and cultural significance from which it was borne.
How about a race every ten years.....where all clubs are required to make a trditional canoe from a native hardwood tree from scratch to finish, and then race it.
Its all a matter of what you want to get out of the experience...not always what you expect/want it to be.
Rules are guidence for those who don't respect tradition.

Just some thoughts.
