No, because they are not Giblin's Hurricane subcontractor anymore. There's a whole thread about it 3 years ago in the archives. Jinli, kept Giblin's molds and equipment and made canoes under the Name of Southern Ocean Canoes, tried to sell them in Europe, same happened to Hypr. We have a Vantage here in Australia with Southern Ocean Canoe sticker on it that entered the country in the hull of a large yacht, as AOCRA branded it a pirated boat, the owner could not sell or register it.
Search the archives for the full story.

Wow, I was more looking at the outrigger with a surfski paddle. So much old dry drama. Didnt really hear much about it lately especially since Hypr is done in the canoe biz but this pic kind of drums it up again a little.

Here's the Vantage in question with a letter "P" where the letter "H" normally is on a Hypr. The full name is Paihia, which is a New Zealand place name.
So in a way the pirates, pirated the pirates...hahaaaa.

Notice the Hurricane twist and lock collars on the iako's.

Well that is unfortunate..China is the knock off capitol of the world.
That is why I choose to buy my boats from the builders directly or through their approved dealer network. Its important to pay respect to the people who designed these awesome OCs and ensure their livelihood. As long as buyers are aware and don't buy from these pirates, that will greatly limit their ability to sell in the market.

wow I had no idea they were doing that! I mean I had heard but that picture kinda seals the deal. It just sucks because the only people who would fall for a boat like that are people who just dont know and are so far away that most others wont know either. This things are have got to be the biggest pieces of junk.

What's worse is that someone would put their brand new boat down straight onto their cement driveway. Dude, put that boat on the grass.

They're sanding off the rough spots.
#8 Mon, 06/30/2008 - 9:45am
Its gonna take a lot more than that to work out the "rough spots" with that canoe! I really feel sorry for whoever buys those canoes. At least with Ian Foo he was fighting for better results on the sales end. Who know with those boats.

Southern Ocean Canoes folded some time back.
This is what happens to pirate molds.

Whatever happened to Hypr? Seems like they kinda fizzled out or something? Or maybe its because Ian Foo is no longer posting here so I haven't heard anything. Weird.

they are strictly in the SUP biz now
#12 Mon, 06/30/2008 - 8:17pm
I think that a hull must be 10 % different from a 'parent' version to not be considered a copy.
#13 Mon, 06/30/2008 - 10:41pm
Hypr did what the chinese now do, they more or less copied things with sall changes and left the original designers a bad expirience to remember
#14 Tue, 07/01/2008 - 7:41am
how do you measure 10 % of a design ?
#15 Tue, 07/01/2008 - 5:23pm
If you're a Chinese factory, changing the color is 10%.
#16 Tue, 07/01/2008 - 5:30pm
It is probably difficoult in practice it is also not 10% but 25% to be able to claim the design.Which s what Hpyr did on most the boats changed the decks a bit and start making them and realy the worst thing was to claim that he didi it partnershp with the original designers.
You could say it was karma that returned the favor but on the other hand most of these manufacturers have to know that once they stop or switch the 'chinese contractor'company making boats for them the will still be made under another name.
