Cystic Fibrosis Foundation I am asking the paddling community to join me in creating an 'Ocean of Strength' to help fight cysti

I am proud to announce that Dana Outrigger Canoe Club has chosen to support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation at this year's Whitey Harrison 9-Man race.

My name is Sam Couch and I am the coach for the Newport Aquatic Center Men's Outrigger Team. I also have cystic fibrosis. I was diagnosed with the disease when I was two years old. With the support of my friends and family, I have stayed active and lived well beyond my prognosis. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has been invaluable as it supports efforts to find new treatments and work towards a cure for cystic fibrosis.

Cystic fibrosis is a disease which causes extensive lung and intestinal damage. It is a genetic, chronic disease that affects about 30,000 children and adults in the United States alone. In the 1950s, few children with cystic fibrosis lived to attend elementary school. When I was born in 1973, the prognosis for children did not extend beyond their early teens. Today, advances in research and medical treatments have greatly enhanced life for children and adults with cystic fibrosis. Thanks in large part to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, many people with the disease can now expect to live into their 30s, 40s, and beyond.

Canoe paddling is a huge part of my own fight against cystic fibrosis; I have been paddling canoes for over 20 years. Canoe paddling pushes me to stay as fit and as active as possible and, in turn, keeps my lungs as healthy as possible. I am asking the paddling community to join me in creating an 'Ocean of Strength' to help fight cystic fibrosis.

We are selling Patagonia race jerseys and all proceeds will benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. SCORA has given approval to wear these jerseys for the Whitey Harrison race to show support for the fight against Cystic Fibrosis. Clubs/Teams are encouraged to wear these jersey’s for the race. We will be getting order information up with coming week for teams to check out.

We'll work something out as soon as I get more information as to the price and when we can get these Jerseys out I will Post something.

Last year Dana Outrigger Canoe Club's long distance nine-man race did a fund raiser for Breast Cancer. "The Sea of Pink", we had an amazing turn out with I think almost if not every womens team racing in pink jerseys. This year our club is hosting the "Ocean of Strength". These fund raisers are something our club has recently decided to do, so every year we will change our beneficiary to give back to our community, and to help our friends who are in need.

And to anyone who wants to help out, we thank you all so much!

A download-able PDF order form will be available in the next day or so. Fill in the information and then fax it to the number (Newport Aquatic Center).

We need orders to be received by the 27th of July, then we will hand out the jerseys day of the race OR mail them out to whoever requests, $8 priority mail for up to 10 jerseys.

Like TPoppler said, more info in the next day or so with a sketch of the jersey design.

Thanks for the support!

I may be badly intruding on privacy but Sam Couch had to go to the hospital a few days ago and I wanted to wish him well and give our ohana a chance to do so as well.

He's wasnt admitted yet. He's at home with the flu. We paddled the canoes back from LB last saturday and we were all pretty broken down after the 24+ miles. Sam pushes hard and just over did it. He said he's ok, but he's not one to complain, even when he's miserable.

Sam isnt feeling well and checked into the hospital today. I think he will be out for a week or so. I am unsure if he'll race but Im sure he's doing everything he can to get healthy and be there. If he's racing he'll be steering the nac "A" boat.

Send in the oder form using the new fax number I listed in my last post with the attachments and it will be added to the tally and the final order form.

We are also ordering more in various sizes to sell at the race - but those will be in limited supply.

Thanks for the support - we really appreciate the paddling community stepping up for this cause.
