Paddling tips when the swell is on ama side

Hi guys,

I've only been paddling OC-1 since late March and you guys have been great in giving me advice in the past.
I really appreciate the priceless advice I have received
I'm pretty good at huli'ing now but I don't know what to do when I'm paddling along the coastline and a swell comes up on my ama side.
Do I turn into the swell and ride over it or should I turn away from the swell and try to ride it?
Or should I just keep paddling foward and try to ride over it?

As always, Mahalo for your advice!

Aloha ai kea,
i think it all depends on where you are heading to?
i like to plan my line before the start, so you kine of draw a line from the starting point, then through the middle and all the way to the finish line.
some times the inside is running so its worth to be just behind the surfline.
some other times to paddle a highline and take a dive and ride the swells just a half mile before the finish

as usual, it will all click by spending as much water-time as posible......you paddle, you get stronger and smarter.

aloha and have fun!

of course catching any ridable bump or swell is always the preferable option, as long as it makes sense (vs. taking you in the wrong direction)...

but otherwise, i don't think it should matter whether swell is coming from any direction... you go where the water is moving, but besides that, you should just get comfortable with your ama and your balance in general. learn how to fly your ama -this is not for style points, but an important skill which gets you comfortable with your balance, and makes it automatic when your ama starts popping.

ass on seat, time on water... sorry no shortcuts...
