Comprehensive book on Paddling?

My coach keeps talking about a "manuscript" written by one of the Foti's (I think it was Jim) a long time ago. He says it covers everything... history, rigging, stroke, steering, crew selection, race and crew management, paddler personalities, etc.. Basically, a how-to-coach, book. Does anyone else know about this? Did it ever get published? Or, is there something else out there?

Don't know about the Foti's, but Steve West wrote the most comprehensive How-To book on OC I've seen and there is a lot of references to the Foti's in that book so perhaps this is what your coach is referring to.

Check out kanuculture.com for "The Paddlers Guide to Outrigger Canoeing".

Oh ditto, ditto; Steve West's book is the final word. He also published a wonderful 'Steering Manual' that is as good or better. I've heard that one is being revised and hope it will be out soon. Steve West should be regarded as one of the best practitioners of the sport, supporter of the culture, chronicler of current races, canoes, trends and so on. His analysis of tecnique, canoe development (or lack thereof),racing history and other aspects of our life is way more thourough than most. He has a deep and true appreciation for the true feeling and spirit of 'outrigger', the photos are the best; I cannot reccomend these 2 books too highly!

Just reminded me of an incident at the last months Hamo with Westy.

We both paddled in the Mooloolaba Masters 42k crew and on the 1st change Westy popped into seat 1 and I went to 5. After our stint in the canoe we boarded the support boat and here's Westy with a big fat lip and blood pouring down his face.

I said "Westy, what the bloody hell happened?"
He said " Just as i grabbed the Gunnel's to enter the canoe it lurched upwards and smacked me in the face" (i actually filmed it on one of the on-board Cams)

I'm thinking .. maybe this is the "Canoes" way of reminding Westy another book needs publishing ... i reckon totally dedicated to OC1 as this is the current growth area.

Highly recommend all Westy's books, i have them all and read and reread them often.

Look at it this way, maybe you've read one more book than they have.

Anyone knows where to find Kanu Culture vol 1 to 4 ?
On the Kanu Culture Website, they don't have them.

Please include Tommy Holmes' THE HAWAIIAN CANOE in the discussion, its the bible.

Vol 1 -4 are now collectors items, I'll check with Westy, but i think he sold them all at Hamo a few years ago.

And just so you know, page 10 & 11 of Vol 4 features a very young Rambo jumping out of seat 1 at Hamo in 1995. Todd Bradley steering, Walter Guild getting in at 5 .... ahhhh .. those were the days of composite Hawaii / Aussie crews and getting plastered at the "Barefoot Bar".

numerouno - Does Tommy Holmes' book include information about paddling? Or is it more of a history book about the canoe? Care to talk more about the volume?

It's all about the Hawaiian canoe as the Title suggests. Nothing much about modern paddling techniques.

Must have book if you truly want to connect with the past history of the Canoe and understand the cultural significance from a Hawaiian perspective.
