Yep, it’s the Columbia River Gorge.. a Pacfic Northwest windsurfing, kiteboarding sailing and other more important water sports ( outrigger) mecca due to the warm weather and steady winds flowing from the Oregon Coast into the desert interior of the state.. river flows down from BC and the wind blows upriver, creating some great conditions.

yes, Dacho it really is called Drano Lake. a great fishing spot too… As I finished the run and came into the lake this bloke in a rowboat reeled in a beatiful hatchery salmon - probably 10-13 lbs..talk about silver bullets!

Nice run. We did two runs on the first leg on Friday, and after hearing about the Drano section, wish we just kept going.

It’s fun in there, paddlefast! The winds happen mostly in summer, I think. Cool air at the coast rushes up the narrow gorge towards the hot desert (east). So when the coast is cool and the desert’s hot, which is quite often is summer, you get the crazy thermals. Also, winds are going against the river’s current, making the bumps stack up even more. They’re really easy to ride, just get in line and off you go!
