That Junior crew was comprised of (not sure of the exact seating order) Kekoa Bruhn, Aaron Creps, James Bustamante, Kahaku Aspelund, Matt Crowley, Karel Tresnak and a blazing time of 7:19!
That Junior race was sumting else.. Thought had full moon with the way it was goin.. Hui Nalu crew, # 5 fell out halfway to the last turn.. picked him up on the way to the finish. They were doing good too.. prolly 3rd had he not fell out. was hilarious.
Correct me if I am wrong, experts, but the ama has to have a certain percentage made out of koa. Some are 100%, while others are hybrids. If you look at the boat directly behind them, you will see what I mean.
Have Fun…Kicbacmaui!
I was just kidding around, but looks like some of the women take performance enhancing drugs. I guess to be more politically correct, some paddlers (men/women) look like they take something other than just the usual protein/creatine/etc. Please note I said “some”.
But seriously, is there drug testing on the winners for a big event such as this?

A boat’s a boat, but the mystery box could be anything. It could even be a boat!
J - Although it’s not in good form to explain a joke, I’m pretty sure that’s just an example of dry humor: sarcastic, facetious, mocking. It’s not unusual to “not quite follow” if you’re expecting an honest, non-humorous statement.
We have a rule that your butt is not allowed to leave the seat (unless it is for change overs).
I think it was to keep steerers seated on the turns during sprints? I think boats were getting damaged with some crazy levering. Clubs were reluctant to lend their craft during regattas if they were going to get bruised up.
Does that rule not apply anywhere else?
And yep… that is a great shot. Is it affective for the number 2 to pry that far down the boat?
That is why they have 1,3, and 5 on the right side of the canoe to allow 2 to execute which will not let the ama dive. To be honest, Lanikaiÿs turns where quite impresive as well as the other canoe clubs that did the same manuver in that ” world ” day.
1,3 and 5 are on the right so 1 can uni.
They shouldn’t be leaning out of the canoe.
It’s a beautiful turn, very well executed, no one can deny.
One to admire.
Whether in your seat or out… nicely done.
The best part of all of this is that the crew won the race. Whether the “Kahi” was too much or not is irrelevant. For example, when I watched video of the Shell Va’a crew, their technique is not the way I learned but they are obviously effective and prove it by smashing everyone in the Hawaii and Tahiti races and in the process break and set some impressive records. No one can deny that Tahiti is the bomb. Just because some clubs/crews in Hawaii succeed with unconventional methods in our races does not mean it is wrong. It’s just not what your used to. So I was looking at the picts and was wondering, is there drug testing on the women? I’m just saying because … just look at some of them.

I guess I’m slow b/c I’m not quite following. Why don’t you expand on your statement, bvillanu?

Ummm yeah, I wasn’t serious. It was just my sarcastic way of relaying to bvillanu that I think he’s an ass without actually calling him one.

I knew that, just wanted to follow up with a serious question.
But before we stray off topic too much. These guys look like they turned right on the base of the flag. IMG_0860733.htm

Extra weight that far out makes the ama dive.
unnecessary and undone in most areas of the world.
but dramatic.
nice pic.
