Hi there. Been paddling for 2 years and look forward to the Nationals every year. I steer and always need to grab the turns. My number 1 is great, so feel it is I who is failing. I am not the greatest steerer but would like to be!!! Have had advise from top steerers but I just cannot make it stick in my head. Any suggestions?

Don't force it. Get a bigger paddle.
And yell at your crew somewhat more forcefully.
