concept 2 rower

Anybody using a concept 2 rower as a supplement to paddling workout?

Yes, but I have it modified for kayaking.

There is alotta controversy about paddling machines. Some say they don't replicate the resistance accurately and its easy to fall into bad technique. For instance, if you are using a Concept Two, your posture and the placement of your feet is nothing like it is in an OC-6.

We have snow on the ground several months of the year and the weather patterns make make regular paddling impractical.

I get a read-out of how fast I'm paddling and how much distance I've gone. It is totally inaccurate I'm sure, but it at least gives me some sort of baseline.(There is a Canadian manufacture paddling machine that doesn't have any speed or distance display.)

If offers an opportunity to exercise the right muscle groups and get my heart rate up. Mentally it allows me to set some goals and derive some sense of daily achievement.

I paddle for exercise and view machine paddling as acceptable substitute exercise.

The best training is of course in the boat.

Living In Canada my Paddle One does help me keep fit over the winter specific to paddling muscle groups....when I am not lazy ;-). I don't care about distance, speed or stroke rate so no need for a computer for that. I just use my heart rate monitor and time to plan my effort and workout duration which is what counts.

It significantly helps fitness over the winter so starting paddling in the April thaw is not so painful and I at have at least a decent base to start with. Its not like water feel but it significantly helps fitness when you don't have a 12 month paddling season.

Still waiting for a machine that could help steersmen to practice their poke :-)

Dude Hiro C, there is a cornucopia of methods out there to practice your poke. You might have to be a bit creative at times but trust me its out there.

But sometimes its gonna cost you. See iako thread...
