Just a point of interest... Did you know that Hui Lanakila's top women's crew was about 1/4-mile from the start line when the race began? By my math, (which is admittedly pretty weak) they passed 128 other canoes in 2 hours and 11 minutes to finish third overall.
What was Hui Lanakila doing a quarter mile away at the start?
Impressive run from back there, but next time.....(fill in the rest with your own advice!)
Reeling in 128 canoes over 2 hours would have been something most of them would never had experienced before. I'm guessing the buzz of progressively doing that motivated the crew like nothing else, probably their best race ever.
Love to hear some comments from some of the ladies in the crew.
Started putting canoes in too late, put in our other crews' canoes first, official boat told us we still had 5 more minutes (which turned out to be ONE), blah blah blah. Amateur move no matter how you look at it :(
Shit happens but sadly, Rambo, we started a 1/4 mile behind 2 years ago and finished third then as well....only that time, our steersman got knocked out of the canoe by another crew's nose. At least we had a legit excuse that year! :)
Hey guys. We were caught on the pier and didn't leave it until it was too late. You're right, Rambo. It was a total crew-bonding experience to learn how much we can each depend on eachother in a tough "come from behind" race. We just put our heads down and paddled hard. Great workout, mentally and physically. Waikiki Beach Boys and Team Bradley did a great job covering us and they paddled a great race. E Lau Hoe is this weekend (Hawai'i Kai to Nanakuli- 32 miles) so the season is going by fast! Congrats to WBB for a great Kona win!
My crew passed a crew in distress where the stroker appeared to slump over and actually fall out of the canoe. Does anyone know what happened & if that stroker & the rest of her crew are all okay? My crew is still very concerned -- we hauled ass to get to the official boat to tell them to radio for help and go assist the crew (we would have placed a lot better if we could have sustained that run!).
That girl who was slumped over had passed out...she is my sister and was taken all the way back to Keahou and picked up by a ambulance to the hospital...heat exaustion...probably...Mahalo to her steersman Tiana Heen-Miguel for her quick actions in grabbing her when my she fell out of the canoe in a daze (I love U man!!!) You saved her from drowning. And Mahalo to anyone else who was out there helping the situation...like letting the officials know...It was a serious situation and I thank you for the KOKUA!!!
