Stuck iako in my Huki...HELP!!!

I have a stuck iako that I can not get out of my Huki V1-R. The back one came out ok with a little tug, but the front one will not even move a little bit. Any ideas before I break out the pipe wrench and try not to do a ton of damage?!?!

If no fit, just put spit!

Did you try sticking a large screw driver in the ama end hole of the iako....i.e. "thread" the hole with the largest diameter screw driver or rod for leverage to twist. You also might try heating the iako as near the canoe as possible which would cause expansion, and hopefully break the seal, then try the above once its cooled.

If boataid's aid doesn't work try heating up (no more then hair dryer heat) the area in which the iako is stuck and then feed some ice cubes down the iako tube. The heat should expand the female part if you will and the ice cubes ortin' 't shrink the male iako.
... at least in my experience.

Why not just try a can spray can of WD40 first. Spray the area a few times to let it soak in, then warm the area and iako with a hair dryer to thin the spray even more. Leave overnite and you should have success.

Is the iako in it's home position or is it twisted and jambed??

Rambo, I'm surprised to didn't suggest to use vegemite...

..... ...continued
and when you have extracted the stuck iako, clean up the spray with a cloth and coat the iako receiver and the iako itself with Vegemite. You will never has a stuck iako ever again.

I also had a iako get stuck in my HUKI hull several years back. I used to leave my boat "rigged" all of the time. I basically did what Rambo recomended..a little WD40, little heat, a little hard "twist" w/ pliers, etc. It eventually freed. It had some pitting and buildup on the iako/receiver. I sanded them down. I think the salt water reacted w/ the aluminum and receiver hole and formed a bond. I now take my canoe apart and rinse after each paddle and WD40 now and then.

What actually happens as drewp mentions above, is the saltwater reacts with the aluminium and the resulting growth seizes the iako in the receiver tube. The Wd40 dissolves the growth and frees up the seizure.

and to keep HiroC happy ...... a mix of Vegemite and WD40 applied to the receiver tube will prevent regrowth.
