Please be somewhat critical that others may get a good idea how your boat performs. It's all subjective, but still valid.

Please rate : 1 = average, 2 = good, 3= very good, 4= excellent

eck,
suggestion: you might want to add weight, height, experience level, since that seems to be some of the most common questions.

to fit in your grading system:
height:
1-under 5'3
2-5'3-5'7
3 5-8-6-0
4 6-0-6-4
5 over 6'4
something to that effect

weight similar to above

Dacho - thank you.

I have sent/am sending a spreadsheet related form to the builders where I inquire about the weight the boat is intended for.

If you go to the blog - click below - at the left bottom you can see - option to enlarge - the spreadsheet and the information that we are trying to collect.

The shorter survey above is user feed back for a general idea about the boats. It would be difficult to get experience in there: like "8 padlers on a ___ had an average of 4 years paddling experience wouldn't make sense".

The height thing is a great idea - mahalo.

We will try to make some short video profiles of paddlers that are interested. There we can mention their experience.

I have added :

  • paddler's intended height
  • build quality

if you have taken the survey before and want to comment on these two, please just put the name of the canoe and fill in these two features but leave the other features blank that we don't duplicate data.
We are looking for averages.

Thanks to everybody that has responded so far - great response.

First trend:

rating on flat water, upwind - generally a little lower

mixed bag on steering

generally high rating on quality of build.

Tip: height: put in a range if you want
Tip: not registered guests can post, too, can they ?

Mariano - if you would like to publish your canoe's specs in the OC 1 Comparison Chart - this is a different survey - please go to the blog, click the related link, fill in and submit.
I have to do some revision.

This spreadsheet has contact info of builders, technical data etc, too.

If I had more experience I would respond, but I have never been in big waves on the fusion. Great ideas thought, bravo, it is about time. Between you and Rambo, we have a library of info.

Shawn - just leave out the comment on 'big', but please post your feed back.

Your input is important: the more feedback, the better. In the end I will publish averages.

Comfort, build everything is important.

I left experience out on purpose.

Update:

  • about 50 responses so far
  • boats most frequently mentioned: Fusion, Hurricane, Kaimana, Pegasus, Pueo
  • surprise: only one Scorpius so far.

This raised some questions for me:

How many OC 1 are actually out there/have been sold,
how many are actively being paddled,
how many of those visit www.ocpaddler.com,
how many of the latter care to respond to the survey ?

More reports are trickeling in - thank you. Keep on posting:

About 60 comments on OC 1 performance so far. I'd like to reach about 100, 10 for the most common brands. Mahalo.

The Hurricane has been most reported. Here are the averages:

Hurricane - Performance:

  • flat water: 3.92
  • up to 4 feet: 3.21
  • 4 - 8 feet: 2.5
  • big: 2.3
  • upwind: 3
  • steering: 2.33
  • set up/rigging: 3.75
  • comfort: 1.88
  • quality of build: 3.36

Looks pretty representative, doesn't it ?
4 is 'excellent', 1 is 'average'

65 paddlers have responded how they feel about their boat so far.
Hopefully more will post.

Hard to imagine these canoes like getting all 4s hopefully folks will be real, very interesting.

#16 Sun, 09/07/2008 - 9:35pm

Shawn. please have a look at the report on the Pueo that I received in the mail:

Like you, I wonder about a '4' on all ratings.

However, if the Pueo has a better footwell that allows the paddler to apply more pressure - as described in the post - than it could be that a boat that is meant to do well in the surf could also be paddled well in the flat.
The improvement would then be in the cockpit and not at the under water hull.
Similarly, the seat design of the Fusion/Fuze/Zephyr allows very good control of the boat in the open ocean - that may lead to better performance.

Latest news - Some new videos on my blog.

Labels:
- OC 1 Video Review
- OC 1 Downwind Technique

About 80 paddlers rated their OC 1; I will soon be able to publish another average.

The World Map Of OC 1 Dealerships is growing and can be enlarged now - most of those guys live in very nice places.

Tell me, does 'fuzerider' - distributor in Maine - have an outrigger behind his house on google maps ?
