OC1 Surfing Video

Here is my first attempt at a canoeing video, I'm no Rambo Speilburg but I think it passes. It was filmed at a break just next to the estuary mouth in Mandurah Western Australia. The ride is about 500m long when you get onto a good one, and as you can see very crowded! It's mostly surfed just by the OC1s in our club, though we do share the waves every now and then with the local dolphins. I really want to get that on camera! Enjoy and any feedback is appreciated.

Awesome wave for one manning. I bet it would be fun on the 6 man as well...nice rollers. Fun watch.

Good Job. I just got my GoPro and am trying to figure it out. Maybe one day I'll have something up myself.

Got a question cause I'm a noob to surfing a one man. How do I turn left on the wave? The boat goes right despite pushing the left rudder pedal all the way.

Thanks.

I added the video to the "OC 1 Surfing Technique" section on the blog with a short comment and some info about Mandurah, Australia - thanks Colin for suggesting that.

bvillanu - you have to be faster than the water you are moving on if you want your rudder to do anything.

Ahhh, thanks, read your “OC 1 Surfing Technique”, been just letting the wave carry me cause just been on little ones till recently. So if I read correctly, either paddle some more to gain more speed on the wave, or fly the ama. Guess I need to go practice that flying thing in flat water like how one of the articles on here.

For me, turn left...press left rudder. It usually works. Also Eck is right too...if you know the wave is going to break behind you, it is good to paddle in front of the white water to help keep your rudder out of the mush for better control. I like to also fly the ama, get it out of the water for beter control and manuverability (?).

But I have to say that I use a Fusion, so according to Fuzerider, its the chines that give me full control.......

Yes, the rudder needs flowing water to create lift just as much as an airplane needs air flow to fly.
If your boat and the wave have the same speed you are standing still relative to the wave - rudder won't do anything.

Thanks for that Colin! Sometimes here in Seattle, we gorget what waves look like. The videos are very motivating.

Ah and it looks like you have some of Rambo's "Herb" tea in your forward bungee!

Great video.
