Molokai Hoe Live?

even though i am not racing i can feel the anticipation,
for us paddlers who are dreaming on being there and cannot,
how about a live coberage?????
wouldn't you think the State Sport DESERVE SUCH A CHANCE?

Terry from Oceanpaddler Tv: could you been so kind with your Feedbacks,
or even you Kaizo i know you put it up on the web last year....

is it expensive?
wich are the red lights stoping this chance?

Live coverage would be great to watch Mariano, but quality capture and play later is probably the best we can expect for a few years yet.

As always, the best story is usually the journey, the lead up to the race, the training, sacrifices, preparation etc, rather than the race itself. Then of course all the story's that are told after of the many experiences.

I would rather see these areas explored on video than the actual race, it then appeals to a larger audience and the true story can be told. As you already know it's the "WHY" that people paddle this race rather than the just the doing of it.

If you get toey my friend, you can always borrow my collection of past Molokai Hoe videos going back to 1999. I've never watched a Hollywood move twice in my life but the Hoe's are always on repeat in the Rambo household.

Cheers Rambo

Aloha Mariano and Rambo,

we looked into producing live coverage for this year's event and talked to many wireless broadcast specialists... The main challenge is broadcasting a decent signal from moving boats or helicopters in the middle of the channel... Conventional wireless uplinks don't work (because the transmitter is constantly moving), the distance of broadcast 42 miles only allows for satellite phone and closer to Oahu (3G cell phone connections).
As you may imagine, the budget for this is tremendous.
We are working with one of our advertising Partners (Mobi PCS) to upgrade their cell phone tours on Oahu to allow for a decent livecast next year.
For now, everyone just has to wait and catch the broadcast and later web downloads.
:)
Aloha Alex

I'm not sure if anyone saw it, but during the Epic sponsored Surfski race from Moloka'i to O'ahu, they had GPS feeds from selected athletes going to the web. I don't think it was fully developed yet.

Then, I noticed someone posted on here (ocpaddler) a Surfski race covered by surfski.info that made a huge improvement with th technology and every competitor had a GPS hook up live to the web - you could see where everyone was along the race course with commentary from the race officials on the webpage as well. No video but it was neat to see the placings during the race and the course routes they took with live feedback.

At the least, that would be nice to have for the moloka'i race if no live video coverage, at least GPS web feeds??

Rob Mousley from Surfski.info does a real keen job of having a live feed during races and having the GPS up-links to check out different placements of the competitors. Also the uploaded maps of different courses paddled by people is interesting to see.

Yes the little moving paddler GPS icons and live commentary was excellent and probably preferable to the LQ interruptible video feed we saw with the OC Solo race. There was however interesting live video phone footage once closer to Oahu as paddlers approached the cliffs and gave an insight of what might be to come in the future. As Alex said, this stuff doesn't come cheap, someone has to pay for it and a large audience is needed to pitch it to.

For the reasons Alex stated, i abandoned a project in Dubai later this year to have small wireless POV cams on individual Surf Skis transmitting to nearby support boats and then up -linking to a wireless data network and on to the web, but the low data transfer rates didn't justify the quality of the video coming out of the Cams. As Rob Mousley from Surfski.info said at the time, "Rambo, imagine controlling a graphic console on your computer screen where you select the moving GPS icon of any of the top paddlers and up pops a video window where you are looking out of the POV Cam mounted on the ski, either mounted in front of or behind the paddler. Awesome."

I've a working model of a light weight ski cam and TX/RX to the support boat, but not the interface that connects to the data stream up-link transmitter. This will happen in the future though as economical technology comes available.

You have to ask the question though, do we need this?

Cheers Rambo

I did Live radio reports back to the big island for a number of years, but the cost was over whelming, as I had to pay my own way. May do it for the OC-1 race in '09

Mahalo Mindy! in fact i was watching the Catalina crossing video posted in your blog, and really enjoyed the interviews to the different crews before the start.

Alex and Rambo, mahalo for the feedbacks, i could see it coming but still needed a reality check, as you both said, in the near future it would be viable!

so then again, mahalo nui, and hopefully everybody competing have a safe and fun crossing!!

Aloha!
ps, Rambo: how this TOEY thing work???MAHALOS FOR THE OFFER!

One of the many reasons our sport doesn't have the viewable audience is that fact that our races can't be seen. With the right marketing campaign one could spread the events to be played at certain locations around the island such as The Shack or Eastside Grill, along with having an online option for home viewers. With this online format you can have advertising for your sponsors so not only do they get the logos on the race apparel but they also get online ads.

Anything is doable with the right amount of money but as Rambo stated with the technology not being available do to cost, its slightly out of our hands.

I would love to see to online GPS on every boat that way you could get a very accurate account of where your competitors are.

3 year ago, RFO (Tahitian TV), with the help of France Television, covered Hawaiki Nui Live... Real time ! They had cameras on escort boats and an helicopter. The technicians were the people who are covering the Tour de France every year. They haven't done it the next years... maybe because of prohibitive costs ?

It can be and has been done using helicopters as transmitting bases or stationary ships, but the costs are huge.

thanks to all the feedbacks is now crystal clear that to cover both Na Wahine and Molokai Hoe live its a different ball game......

but very hard to understand an article i read on the newspaper a month ago regarding not enough support from sponsors on the current Molokai crossing.......

aahhh, he is so cute! If I was there I would rub his belly!! Thomas loves to go out on my one man, when he gets wet people think he is a cat! You should see him on our sailing canoe..He is my pocket dog, weighs in at a big ole 4 pounds.

Funny how our pets are so apart of our life..Here is a photo of my other dog "Joe" He is a little dumb guy. Hates the water, eats bugs, but is the cutest little creature. Look how white his teeth are..hahahaha.Nakoa is biting him!!. Nakoa is making a 4 man canoe for Jimmy Buffet and the dumb dog will stay in the shop all day, he gets fiberglass and stuff all over him!

I am going insane! Time to jump into the water..We are taking some guys out on the sailing canoe who are here from canada to do the channel!!

Now this thread is turning into a pet thread..ok guys, lets see your pups:) It has been a long week...

I hope everyone has a fun weekend.

Terry - I heard those canadians are all olmypic medal winners. I wonder what type of crew they will be?

#19 Mon, 10/06/2008 - 12:40pm

Aloha Thomas,

A couple of them are and I think most are world champions. They were very nice and super excited to be here in Hawaii.

We took them out in the sailing canoe for about an hour and then I had them take me back to the beach and let them take my sailing canoe back out. None of them had ever even seen a sailing canoe, so it was fun to share this part of the culture with them. Us girls (Jane and Katie) and I had fun showing them the ropes (no pun intended) with how to paddle a sailing canoe. They have a great story and it will be very interesting to see where they place.

Good luck to all you guys who are participating. Ocean Paddler TV will be out there filming by media boats and air. There seem to be alot of good stories going on behind the scenes. Keizo is steering a novice crew from Seattle, all the stuff you all are talking about..I can't wait to see how it all plays out.

The October show starts tomorrow on OC-16. This months show will feature some unreal canoe surfing, the importance of water changes and more..Please tune in and let me know what you all think. The show airs 40 times a month, check your local listings.
The on-line new show should start next week..

Mahalo again to all of you for your on-going support of the show. I know I can speak for Alex and Nakoa when I say, Malama Pono, you have no idea how much we appreciate it.
