Hawaiian cruises to another regatta win

LAHAINA - A full-moon high tide struck West Maui on Saturday, but like every other obstacle thrown in its path, Hawaiian Canoe Club dealt with it just fine.

<

p>The giants of the Maui County Hawaiian Canoe Association won the first four races
of the day, eight of the first 10 and 13 of the first 18, seemingly making a statement
to the tide gods that higher seas were not going to slow them down.

<

p> HCC, in a titanic battle with MCHCA brethren to qualify crews for the Hawaiian
Canoe Racing Association state regatta on Aug. 7 at Keehi Lagoon, won the Naleieha
Regatta with 137 points despite four disqualifications.

<

p> Kihei matched its season-high with 93 points and eight wins to finish second while
host club Kahana solidified its hold on third place in the season standings with
58 points and three wins.

<

p> The field was rounded out by Wailea (36), Na Kai Ewalu (30), Lae Ula O Kai (25),
Napili (17), Lahaina (nine) and Hana (eight).

<

p> After the first two races of the day - girls 12B and boys 12B - MCHCA officials
made a decision to allow keiki crews to run their races with adult steerspersons.

<

p> That caused a delay of an hour or so, and a malfunctioning traffic signal at Launiupoko
area slowed cars coming from Maalaea, but the rest of the day went off without
a hitch.

<

p> "It went pretty well,'' Kahana coach Kekai Keahi said. "In the morning
we had a hard time because a south swell came in and we got delayed probably about
an hour after two races. We had a meeting with all the clubs and we decided to
declare adverse conditions. Later, the waves went down and everything went well.''

<

p> Waves enveloping the beach at Hanakaoo Beach Park and lapping over barriers at
several points on the drive from Central Maui to Lahaina created the sense of
a unique day for the paddlers.

<

p> Kahana responded in the regatta named after the family that founded the club in
1975 with wins in the boys 13, mixed novice and men's golden master 55 races.
Kahana also had second-place finishes in 10 other events on the 39-race slate.

<

p> The Kahana men's golden masters have won their event in three of four regattas.
Kahana, however, does not look at victories first, especially on the day it hosts
the regatta.

<

p> "Our club philosophy is not to focus on the wins, but rather on the club,''
Keahi said. "When you run an event like this, there is a lot of work to do
besides paddling. First of all, you have got to race, then you have to man the
food booths, the silent auction, all kinds of stuff. There is a lot of effort
that goes into it.''

<

p> Still, 58 points was a season best for the host club by seven points.

<

p> "I think we did pretty good on the water,'' Keahi said. "To be third
in this association behind Hawaiian and Kihei, which are behemoth clubs, is pretty
good for us. We are not a big club, but we hold our own against the big clubs.
We just have to keep on building and building and hopefully get to where they
are some day.''

<

p> It is the strength of clubs like Kihei and Kahana that has the three-time defending
state champions from HCC sweating.

<

p> Hawaiian came into the day with 30 crews in top-two state qualifying positions,
the same number as Oahu power Kailua and six fewer than Kai Opua of the Big Island.
The disqualifications hurt the 20-time defending MCHCA champions on Saturday,
but coach Diane Ho was still pleased.

<

p> "We accomplished just about everything we wanted to accomplish today,'' Ho
said. "Our men were awesome.''

<

p> The HCC men won at the novice A, freshmen, sophomore, junior, open 4 and masters
40 levels.

<

p> The HCC keiki had their usual impressive showing with 12 wins, two seconds and
a disqualification.

<

p> "We tried not to ponder on the tide,'' said Hawaiian keiki coach Paul Luuwai.
"The reality is that everybody had to deal with it. We didn't make much of
it. It is only a quarter-mile or half-mile race, so we just told everybody to
make every stroke count, pull hard and go fast.''

<

p> Ho said her club remains focused on improving in the women's and masters ranks.

"The competition on Maui is awesome,'' Ho said. "Our women are really
improving, but so are all the rest of the women on Maui. The same with the masters.
It's real tough. The crews that we manage to get through (to state) will all be
tested.''
