Aftermarket Amas

Hey, does anyone know if there are manufacturers that make after market amas? or maybe someone who makes other amas to fit other boats?

Are you talking about OC1's? I just finished an OC1 ama. I havent tested it yet and couldnt tell you if it'll improve your OC1's performance but I did put it in the water and it actually floats in position by itself. Ive never seen an ama do that. Then I pushed it and it glides along on its own. Its kinda bitchen actually. Its real short behind the rear iako and has a swallow tail. It was built as a sculptural exercise/fun. Not planning on selling any at this point but if it runs well I may consider molding/producing it. If youre interested PM me and Ill send you a pick. You may want to consider fabricating your own. Its not that difficult. I think it would be cool to see what people come up with.

I've seen the monster ama and if it doesn't attract alien suitors with strange fetishes I don't know what will.
Yes I've met boataid and he's actually a pretty cool guy and if there is one thing to say it would be that he's pretty passionate about his stuff, which is good enough for me.

I am now able to offer an aftermarket ama for both types of Hurricane iakos. This is a Tahitian style semi-custom product built on Oahu. It can be adapted to other boats. For further information PM me.

I dont know how to post the actual pics. Hopefully the links work. Im still workin on a name........feel free to suggest.

#9 Thu, 10/02/2008 - 6:55am

now that is sexy. do you know if its possible to put say a peg ama or kamanu ama on say a fuze? and if possible, where would you buy one?

#10 Thu, 10/02/2008 - 7:35am

Looks cool. How can you not have tried it yet? It would be driving be crazy having it sitting there unused.

#11 Thu, 10/02/2008 - 1:16pm

It pains me to say this, (because I'm so grumpy and hate saying anything nice to anyone) but that thing looks pretty cool. Nice job aquafiend65.

#12 Thu, 10/02/2008 - 2:04pm

steve lis would be proud.

any reason behind the swallow tail besides the fact that it looks cool?

i'm afraid to ask how much one would cost though...

#13 Thu, 10/02/2008 - 6:28pm

Aqua,
jc9 0 beat me to it! Is there a reason for the swallow tail --besides lookin' bitchen??? Very cool job--looks like the bottom gets flatish towards the rear iako. Are your thoughts/reasoning on the design a trade secret or can you share? When do we get a report on how it works?

#14 Thu, 10/02/2008 - 7:03pm

Its all about being bitchen:-) Its actually not for sale but I reckon it would cost whatever any other ama would cost. $400-$600??? I dont even know what ama's run. Theres no design secret. It was inspired by the new pueo ama. I was lookin at the pueo ama and just wondered what would happen if you designed one that was the antithesis. It just sorta stayed in my head and kept buggin me. When that happens I have no other choice but to build the damn thing. I have no idea how it'll work. It wasnt really built to work so much as to get the damn thing out of my head. I need to make some custom iakos so I can test it. It's designed o fit the Pueo but I dont really know any one who has a pueo who'd be willing to test it. Any takers? Still need a name. Ive been thinking the "Swift"...like the bird.

#15 Thu, 10/02/2008 - 7:25pm

ok, im jus gonna restate the question. but is there any way to buy other amas. and if so, how do you get the iakos?

#16 Thu, 10/02/2008 - 7:55pm

kcchee11

your best bet is to email the builders. i doubt theres to many ppl who are going to sell you just the ama of their canoe.

aqua, theres only a few pueo's in cali right now but if you wait til after molokai when the one man season starts up i'm sure there are some people who would be stoked to try it out.

#17 Thu, 10/02/2008 - 7:59pm

perhaps you could call her the Antithesis.

royalty checks can be made out too...

#18 Thu, 10/02/2008 - 8:44pm

That's a pretty cool ama Aqua. The fact that it floats upright concerns me a bit though, as that suggests it may have quite a lot of contact with the water and therefore have considerable drag. But i could be wrong, maybe it will plane as it gains speed like a surfboard.

I always thought a simple banana shape was all that was needed on an outrigger, it cuts well at the front and releases at the rear and when compressed, it just lengthens it's water line.

Was part of the inspiration from your surfboard design on Swaylocks? Looks similar.

Keep up the good work.

Cheers Rambo

Hey Rambo
I know you know about wetted surface area and displacement so maybe Im missing something, but if you were to build the "banana" ama and it weighed exactly the same as my ama wouldn't the wetted surface area be identical? I was under the impression that mass displaces its own weight. Granted the "foot-print" between the two might be substantial different, but the wetted surface the same, no?
It seems to me that most amas are like knives.......they slice through the water, but when there is lateral force. either from a quartering/side swell or turning, the knife creates lots of drag and resistance. Try draggin a butter knife through the water, then side to side.
This ama is more like a spoon..........the idea was, and I dont know if this is the correct shape to achieve it, is an ama that glides (planes) when going forward as well as side to side. I wanted to remove all lateral force/resistance by removing the vertical side surfaces associated with other ama/s
I shortened the back, behind the rear iako so as to have even less mass to have to move/swing around.......and to go a step further I incorporated, as you and jc9_0 mentioned, a known surfboard element, the swallow tail, in hopes it would create an even "looser" and quicker release/feel.
In essence its intended to skip glide above the water with very very little or no vertical surfaces below the water surface. In reality it might be total shit:-)

hahhaha!!!
Aloha Aqua! and good job on your Ama, isn´t it a really fun thing to do? to shape one, i mean, i enjoyed a bit more shaping the Ama than the hull plug, dont ask me why, but amas are beautifull, i am sure you will love her even more once you try her.

aloha!

#21 Fri, 10/03/2008 - 4:30am

oo. cool... sexy... I want one.. will it fit a Kaimana?

#22 Fri, 10/03/2008 - 5:43am

how about calling it "the Fiend"?

excerpts from Wikipedia

In religion, folklore, and mythology a fiend is a supernatural being that is generally described as a malevolent spirit, generally understood as a fallen angel, frequently depicted as a force that may be conjured and insecurely controlled.

insecure control sounds a lot like most of my surfing runs... I think it works..

#23 Fri, 10/03/2008 - 5:48am

Looks draggy to me , but I`m open to testing one on my Fuze.

Ship one out to me and I`ll post here with the whole truth on the subject....

#24 Fri, 10/03/2008 - 6:19am

He could ship it out to you, but it would be late, the wrong color, and have unanticipated shipping costs.

#25 Fri, 10/03/2008 - 6:27am

LMAO!!!
fuze, whoever is right or wrong, I think you're going to keep getting these comments for a while, and I have to admit to getting a laugh every time.

#26 Fri, 10/03/2008 - 6:48am

marianolarghi: thanx brudda, It was a lot of fun. Its certainly alot more managable than a hull. I hope to test her next weekend. I just need to fabricate iakos.

kcchee11: As metioned above, any ama can be adapted to any boat. You will most likely need to fabricate custom iakos

Openocean: It will fit the Kaimana/Pueo most easily as its iako ports are identical but as I mentioned to kcchee11, it will fit any boat.

Fuze: Define "draggy". I appreciate the offer of unbiased, honest testing but Im gonna try to get some local guys so that I too may observe.

#27 Fri, 10/03/2008 - 6:50am

funny Fuze would say it looks draggy. I was just talking to a couple guys about ama's yesterday. and man those things elicit such a strong response from everyone. seems most guys decide the thing is good or sucks before it has even touched the water, or in this case a canoe.

there are the 3 or 4 guys that have tried Keizo's ama and swear that it is pure crap. but then the overwhelming majority go through a transitional phase of:

1:"whoa that thing's wierd, the nose is going to dig and make it tracky"
2:"it's ok in the flats, but i'm going to rig another ama for when it's big"
3:"it surfs ok i guess, and man it runs really quiet and stable"
4: "it's the best ama i ever had"
5: "i wish my penis could do this"

granted i haven't talked to everyone that owns Keizo's ama.

step 5 may be a stretch. pun intended.

#28 Fri, 10/03/2008 - 7:06am

5: “i wish my penis could do this”
Hahaha.....considering I want my ama to effortlessly glide side to side as well as forward I hope "she" never says wow, you feel just like your ama

jc9_0 brings up a good point and I'd just like to clarify that Ive heard good things about the new pueo ama. Keizo and Johhny (I dont know the rest of the crew but Im sure theyre just as good) are talented and experienced paddlers and builders. Im just a designer with minimal paddling experience in an OC1. This was a design exercise for me. If it works, great, if not it was fun anyways.

#29 Fri, 10/03/2008 - 8:16am

It Looks really cool, if anything its the coolest looking ama I've ever seen. I really want to try it out. Call up Danny his dad owns a Pueo, about the iakos just go out and build them damn it. If you have he tools to build an ama you have the tools to build iakos.

#30 Fri, 10/03/2008 - 9:52am

Hey Aqua...awesome job dude. It looks really cool.

Don't know how someone can call it 'Draggy' if they really can't see the bottom shape of it. A boat (no diff than an Ama) cuts drag by having a long waterline, sharp entry and exit. Don't see why this Ama would be draggy....especially if it has not even been tested on the water yet. ;-)

Keep on evolving it....its all about the process.

Aloha
Pittbrah

I knew a little digging that would get you talking about it Aqua ... hahaha. Yep, the displacement/surface area theory is right, but shape affects drag too, as we know. Good on you for thinking outside the square, all the answers are usually provided by Mother Nature, we just need to look around. In this case it was the "Swallow" that ignited the spark for you.

Let's get it mounted and see how she goes, inquiring minds wanna know.

This picture below is the opposite to what you have, more like a knife. Both Ama's function as stabilizers but will obviously perform differently in different conditions.

I expected Fusy to demand "Chines" maybe he hasn't noticed they're missing yet. ...hahaha.

I`m not so sure chines are the way to go with ama design .

Karels old Viper 2 man had an ama with a flat bottom on it that seemed to plane.

What I`d like to see is some testing on a foiled ama . A small saucer shaped disk at the back of an ama that would skim on top of the water like a skipping stone.

#33 Fri, 10/03/2008 - 12:07pm

"an ama that would skim on top of the water like a skipping stone"

Umm.......you just described my ama fuze.

#34 Fri, 10/03/2008 - 12:47pm

All Joking aside , Fiend , if your ama does that I need one .

#35 Fri, 10/03/2008 - 12:56pm

Aqua. I'll bring my Pueo after the Hoe and let's see what the "fiendish' ama can do.

#36 Fri, 10/03/2008 - 1:14pm

aqua your ama looks fantastic. Im with everyone else. I want to know how it works. When will you test it? If it works when will it be for sale and how much?
