HCC sets scoring mark
By ROBERT COLLIAS, Staff Writer (The Maui News)

LAHAINA - The Dougie Tihada Regatta signals the stretch run to the paddlers of the Maui County Hawaiian Canoe Association.
A post-regatta party thrown by Napili Canoe Club that included two bands, a lip-sync contest, dancing and a lot more merriment could have just as well been a beacon to the rest of the state letting everybody know what the MCHCA is already aware of: Hawaiian Canoe Club is coming on, as usual, when it counts.

HCC broke its own association regatta points record with 151, two more than the 20-time defending MCHCA and three-time defending state champions scored five weeks ago in the season-opening John M. Lake Regatta.

Kihei Canoe Club was second Saturday at Hanakaoo (Canoe) Beach Park with 74 points and four wins, Kahana was third with 58, Wailea and Lae Ula O Kai tied for fourth with 26 each, Na Kai Ewalu was sixth with 22, Napili was seventh with 20, Hana eighth with 13 and Lahaina rounded out the field with 7.

HCC started off the day with another record - a remarkable 14 wins and a second-place finish in the 15 keiki races for 73 points out of a possible 75 in the 18-and-under ranks.

"I'm much happier than last week,'' HCC coach Diane Ho said. "We accomplished everything that we wanted to accomplish today. Our kids were phenomenal. ... The energy to set any kind of points record always starts with the kids.''

Hawaiian also pulled into two more crucial state-qualifying slots in the process and is one point away and coming fast in another event. That gives HCC 31 state-qualifying slots on the 39-race docket, a critical number when the Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association state regatta rolls around on Aug. 7 at Keehi Lagoon.

Kai Opua of the Big Island (with 32 entering Saturday) and Kailua of Oahu (30) are both racking up crews at a pace similar to Hawaiian. The remarkable thing for HCC is that it must get through a loaded MCHCA, which has not only had the overall state champion in four of the last five years (HCC), it has also had a AA Division state champion (Kihei in 2002) and the last three A Division state titlists (Wailea twice and Kahana once). And the MCHCA went from three lanes per race for state to two this year because the Big Island association officially passed Maui on membership numbers.

The MCHCA is a tough association, but Hawaiian is beginning to put ridiculous strangleholds on some of the numbers. HCC won 24 times in 39 races - including 16 of the first 17 and 18 of the first 20 - and was second eight other times. With 31 of the MCHCA's 78 lanes to state, HCC currently owns 39.7 percent of the Maui County allotment.

With a win in the men's junior race, HCC is now just one point out a state slot in that event. The two races HCC took over state spots was women junior and women masters.

Two regattas remain, the Mayor's Umeke Regatta hosted by Lae Ula O Kai next Saturday at Hanakaoo and the Moki Kalanikau Maui County Championship Regatta on July 24 at Ka Lae Pohaku in Kihei.

As the bands warmed up on Saturday, Joey Tihada looked around and smiled. He knew his dad, Dougie, who died in 1989, was doing the same thing somewhere.

"Towards the end of the day I was getting a little worried because things were going really quickly and I didn't ask the band to be here until 6 (p.m.),'' Tihada said. "But it slowed down, it was a great day and now everybody is having fun. This is just how my dad would have liked it.''

Joey joined two of his brothers, Nori and Kalani, to paddle in the men's junior race. The Tihada trio paddled to fifth place with John Flint, Mike Sparling, and Reece Perry, but Saturday wasn't about winning for the Napili kin. The fact that Hawaiian finished 36 seconds before they did only meant that the yellow-and-black-clad host crew got to enjoy the Pacific Ocean longer.

"You know what, we didn't win, but that boat hasn't felt that good for us all season as it did today,'' Joey Tihada said. "We look out there and see clubs like Hawaiian and Wailea juicing up their crews at the junior level and we smile because we know we are paddling against world-class guys.''

Another sign of better times for Napili came when their men's freshmen crew of Timmy Medeiros, Derek Vinuya, Rich Olsen, J.P. Mihlbauer, Mike Haney and Trent Ancog finished second to their West Maui neighbors, Kahana.

Medeiros and Vinuya are both former coaches for the club taking this season off, but they - like many other Napili veterans - would never miss the Dougie. Ancog was a standout athlete at Lahainaluna High School until graduating recently and is also a member of the club's boys 18 crew.

"That freshmen race hopefully includes guys who will be back with us next year and our future in guys like Trent,'' Joey Tihada said.
