Can someone out there give me a bit of history regarding the Kaiwi Challenger OC-1? I've rebuilt and restored one of them to take with me as I drive around the world and would like to know more about this canoe. There doesn't seem to be much in the way of history about this canoe on the web, so info from anyone who knows about this canoe would be greatly appreciated.
I plan on taking this canoe with me as I drive from San Francisco, California to Sydney, Australia to raise money and awareness for the Hemophilia Foundations of Hawai'i and Northern California, as well as the Christina Noble Children's Foundation in Mongolia and Vietnam. Our route will take us through 25 countries and I'll paddle this OC-1 everywhere I can to promote the sport and spread Aloha to the world. Starting in San Francisco, we'll drive through the US and Canada to New York, where the canoe and car will be placed into a container to be shipped to Southampton in the UK. I'll paddle alongside rowers in Cambridge before driving through Europe where I plan to paddle the canoe anywhere I can. In Istanbul, I plan to paddle across the Bosporus and when I reach Azerbaijan I'll paddle in the Caspian. I'll try to paddle the OC-1 in lakes in Mongolia and Russia and Indonesia as I make my way to Australia and Sydney to paddle near the Great Opera House before shipping the car and canoe back to the start in San Francisco.

Designed and built by Walter Guild, winner of multiple Molokais w/ OCC. It was one of the first smaller boats made after Walter and Karel began the transition from the longer Tahitian style oc1s. It's a nice boat and a very advanced design for its time.

Looks like you need less boat and more car.
Proud of you.

This poor canoe was left out on a rack for several seasons, had gouges and cracks in the hull, and someone had scavenged the foot pedals. She was in not-so-great shape when I got her.

You'll be doing a lot of driving somewhat off the beaten path I presume. My suggestion would be to extend the cradles for your boat a little bit forward and backward. Less stress at the center of the hull and better wind resistance.
Geo Metro 3 cylinders, popular car again, nice restore, great mileage for going around the globe. Are you planning to tow the Geo behind on inner tubes once you hit water:)
Have a nice trip and good luck on your adventure.

Agricutural seat on that sit-on is even more 'Farmer Brown' than the thing on a hurricane

We've got a couple of Ka'iwi Challengers in our boat house. If anyone ever comes across a spare ama for the boat, let me know. We broke one in half (darn Juniors!). Then somebody threw away the 2 pieces (darn clean people!) before we could fix/duct tape them back together.

I also like the reference to the Paris to Peking race by motorcycle with sidecar which reverses the course of the Peking to Paris Race.
That first race has particular significance to me. It was won by the father of the father of modern frogmen, Prince Valerio Borghese.

Heck I was already to sign up for the 2011 Chang Jiang Paris to Peking motorcycle with sidecar race when I found out the bikes w/sidecars are selling for $5K now and there's a waiting list. Note on the webpage how the People's Army "flies" the sidecars.
I was going to put Sean Connery in the sidecar or maybe that slinky blonde, Alison Doody, in that Last Crusade flick.
Better stick to canoes with sidecars...but it gives me ideas.
Fel press on!
