SPOT personal locator vs. VHF GPS radios....if $ is not factored in

The guy at the boating store is always talking up this device which looks ideal www.findmespot.com

The scenarios in which I imagine myself needing emergency assistance are not really compatable with a cell phone...and there are a lot of dead zones where I paddle and I have a hard enough time working the damn thing when I am driving. It is interesting that in emergency situations persons fine motor abilities are often diminished to the point where they cannot dial 9-1-1-and push send. I guess getting knocked by a jet ski or hit by the ama or something where I would have diminished abilities is where your best chance would be a one button deal.

If anyone has any comment or if there is some glairing problem with this device that I have overlooked I am all ears. It is 99$ a year for the basic service (27 cents a day) so that is not an issue and a good gift for loved ones.

Thanks.
