Maui Paddlers and safety

This is a question for our Maui paddlers. What type of safety precautions are the norm for some of the more challenging runs? Specifically for runs such as Keanae/Maliko, Honokohau to Canoe beach, Maui to Moloka'i....etc.

Same as they are pretty much anywhere else:

  • Inspect your equipment thoroughly before every paddle;
  • Make sure your plugs are in the "closed" position;
  • Wear a leash;
  • Paddle with a "buddy" or in a group;
  • Carry a signal whistle and/or mirror;
  • Know your limitations and paddle within them;
  • Carry sufficient hydration fluids for your specific needs (~ 1 liter/hour);
  • Carry a spare paddle for inter-island solo crossings;
  • Plan on self-rescuing in a worst case scenario.

Have fun!

sometimes I carry my cell phone with me...

If you're doing Maui-Molokai is good to wear a red or yellow jersey just 'cause the Super Ferry now... they use same route, and it's safer if they can see you from far.

but don't forget to pray. It always worked for me! =)

Aloha.

I've never brought a cell phone out paddling since I didn't think they could get good reception. How far out in the ocean can a cell phone still get signals?

the whole way from Maui to Molokai it works!
If it works on the Molokai Ferry it works on the canoe, right?!
One time one of my friends had problem with her surfski and text message me from Kamalou buy. I didn't hear it during paddling, but I got the message when I arrived on Kaunakakai.
