Jamie and Jessie's blog also talks about the cultural diversity of the sports athletes:

Its a great idea and I wish Manny and Team Pa'a the very best. Manny and his amazing support crew did an outstanding and almost miraculous job of pulling off an awesome OC-1 season culminating with the Pa'a-Steinlager Moloka'i crossing.

I believe Stan's Keahiakahoe also have an all Hawaiian crew? And Waikiki Surf Clubs 18/freshman crew?

I'm surprised they could not find one more Hawaiian to fill the 9th spot, but regardless, Hawaiian by blood or Hawaiian by heart, we are all bonded by the spirit of the ocean.

Ethnic identity comes with a gain - and at the same time with a loss.

Is Manny steering? Has he ever steered a channel?
Both Kea and Raven are great steersmen but I don't know that any of them has a channel under their belt.

Ethnic identity does not come with a loss.

It's a touchy subject-I can see both sides of the coin on that one, but in this case I'm all for it!

People who share a common history, a common lineage, shares a common bond. There is something special with being able to partake in an endeavor in an activity that originated from the ancestors and now passed on to the new generation, thru a spirit of connection from the land to the sea, mauka to makai. Let the spirit live thru the voices of the paddle as six paddles move as one in harmony with the ocean. Safe passage and crossing to all.

Best Wishes to the PA‘A Crew! And all the crews in the channel.

BTW- Manny steered in the channel last year with Hui Lanakila--he ironed it.

Blessings and Safe passage!
A hui hou,

H-Brah!

eckhart, how does being Hawaiian come with a loss?

Everybody has ethnic identity. I did not mention Hawaii.

It is a very interesting topic; the best setting would be poke and beer and lots of time.

In European soccer the entire French national soccer team is ethnically often entirely African. In contrast, the Italian National team is entirely Italian.
France had a more profound, continued role compared to Italy as a colonial power, that explains most of it, but Italy is not too far from Africa either and has a lot of African players in the league, too.

The gain may be that you find identity as a group; the loss may be that you will be exclusive.

In the case of Hawaiians, I think it's important that the ethnicity and culture is celebrated since at one point both were close to extinction due to the illegal invasion of Hawaii by Americans. Thank God for those Hawaiians who survived and perpetuated this culture and especially this sport for all the world to embrace! We are all much better off for it.

We all have a heritage that we should be proud of, but remember that we all bleed the same color.
