Canoe Cover

I need to replace a canoe cover for a Hurricane. Can anyone recommend whether I should stick with the original equipment or go aftermarket? Can anyone recommend a good aftermarket canoe cover for the Hurricane?

The DaKine covers are pretty sweet, a little pricey but worth it. It'll be big for the Hurricane but will protect it nicely! I'd give you my old Hurricane cover but 1. not sure you live here and 2. it doesn't fit entirely on the canoe, hole for the rudder isn't in the correct spot (don't ask me!)

You can probably get one custom made from Stitch This as well.

Good luck!

Any canoe will fit into a DaKine cover. Island Paddler sells them or you can PM me and I can put you in touch with the HI rep.

Custom covers can be ordered from Hawaiian Canoe Canvas located in Kailua, Oahu.

Any of the custom ones the others posted about would do fine besides going OEM. They are all made to protect against sun damage especially if you store your OC-1 outdoors and not indoors or a covered area.

I actually made my own Zephyr cover based off the Stitch This one that I bought for my Fusion at OC. Went and bought some Sunbrella material (same canvas most of them are made from), straps and velcro and made my own hull, ama and iako covers. I know I saved half the cost by just buying the materials, but that's because I knew I could make it myself.

Huki makes a very good quality cover, better than the Hurricane's. I'm sure it will fit the Hurricane but you may have to adjust the rudder opening. They go for $200, had mine for over three years and no problems.

DANUU [www.Danuu.com] makes a good array of generic covers.

Jaimie,

It's actually the second ama cover I made as I made one for my Fusion ama which was way cheaper than buying one. Made the first one to fit and on the second ama cover, since I didn't have the Zephyr yet, I actually made it a little bigger/baggier so it would fit it if it was slightly different from the Fusion ama.

The iako cover was just leftover trimming pieces that I made into a "tubesock" to put them in.

My Brother-in-Law told me the same thing that I should think about making stuff to sell.

Stitch This makes killer Sunbrella canoe covers which prevent any UV damage to your canoe while it's in the cover. I have three of them and highly recommend them. As a bonus, they have velcro closures, so sand can't get stuck in the zipper, and the zipper won't deteriorate from salt water damage. These are rugged covers that last many years. I've had one of them for something like 7 years already and it's still going strong. Here's the link:

For $15 I found a bunch of used Sunbrella fabric at a marine swap meet. I use it for storage of my boats only.
