Where is the trophy ?

Where is the trophy ?
Shell came back to Tahiti without it...
They first were told that the trophy does not exist ! But it can be seen on the pics taken at the arrival last year.
Then they were told that it's at the Bank of hawaii, and nobody can find it.
Finaly they were told that the race rules don't say that the trophy has to be given to a 3 times winner...

Where's the truth ?

Maybe this is a Polynesian thing? Take my trophy and you capture my spirit?

They're at least going to get t-shirts, right?

Hasnt Shell had the trophy for the last bazzilion years?

#3 Sat, 10/18/2008 - 4:34am

JAYBIRD
What Trophy???

As a Coach, I would line up my kids and whisper in the ear of 1, a short message/story (maybe 3 sentences). He would whisper in the next ear and so on. You would be amazed at the end result, nothing close to what you had written down. Asking each what they passed on you could see it change, a word here and there changes not only the who but the why, where and how much. He said, she said, you said because Jim said, etc., etc.

Why blame Lanikai???

#4 Sat, 10/18/2008 - 8:06am

Who blamed Lanikai ?

#5 Sat, 10/18/2008 - 8:43am

Who blamed Lanikai ?

Somebody did on Craigslist (Oahu/Boats) last night accusing Lanikai of being "Guilty Losers" for not giving up the trophy. Tried to find to post/listing again after reading this and it was already gone. Whoever wrote it did it in all CAPS to sound like they were yelling or angry.

#6 Sat, 10/18/2008 - 10:35am

Can someone from Lanikai chime in?

#7 Sat, 10/18/2008 - 10:42am

hiro c

laisse tombé, bientôt ils diront que c'est à cause de toi que shell n'a pas eu le trophé.

et comme pirato a dit aux journal hier soir:

tapea noa tu ta ratou aua,
te re ra ti a matou ra.

bande d'enculé ces "hauli" , ils n'ont qu' à se le foutre dans le cul, leur trophé.

a pics to wish all "hauli" a good night.
because real hawaiians know what is all about. n

#8 Sat, 10/18/2008 - 10:58am

The word is haole, mon frere!

#9 Sat, 10/18/2008 - 11:05am

cherche sur google et tu verras.

#10 Sat, 10/18/2008 - 11:07am

That's just nasty, broham! jfaumeran, I heard you already got banned from racing in Tahiti last time you acted up, cousin. Word gets 'round in this small world of paddling. Google that, motherfucker.

#11 Sat, 10/18/2008 - 11:18am

FYI In English from jfaumeran:

"leave fallen, soon they will say that it is because of you that Shell did not trophé. and as pirato said to the newspaper yesterday evening: tapea noa you your ratou aua, you Re ruffle Ti has tom cat ruffle. bandage of asshole these “hauli”, they have only with it foutre in the bottom, trophé to them."

#12 Sat, 10/18/2008 - 11:20am

Jaybird,

Maybe you didn't say it clearly in this thread but I can remember some of your other posts
"I know what I saw" "They cheated" and other things like that...
Doesn't "spooky-suspicious fast" implies some toughts about cheating in one way or another ? These are your words.

You have no test... True.
You should... True.
So what are you waiting for ? The athletes are the first ones to want to be tested. Don't you think they are the first victims of suspicious minds ?
Before leaving Tahiti for the World champs, every paddler get tested. Can you say the same for the american paddlers ?

Maybe you didn't like the f. word in my previous post. And I agree I should not use this word.
Anyway I still mean the same thing : I you have some evidence, show me. Writing suspicious posts is just too easy.

Also I didn't say anything negative about Lanikai. They are great athletes and I have admiration for them.

Lanikai times for the past 3 years :
2006 5:32:00
2007 5:05:04
2008 4:51:50
In Tahiti, you will find noone thinking that they cheated ! They have greatly improved their finish times. Maybe by changing paddlers and/or training plans...
So has Shell.

#13 Sat, 10/18/2008 - 11:22am

jim "hauli"

si on me fout dehors d'une course, c'est parce que j'ai les couille de dire merde aux gens qui ne comprennent rien au sport.

et si tu me traites de mother fucker cela veut dire que j'avais écris correctement "hauli".

god bless your mother.

#14 Sat, 10/18/2008 - 11:23am

Alright then. Sorry for the "motherfucker". In these parts it's just another way of saying "bro". Felicitations to Shell!

#15 Sat, 10/18/2008 - 11:28am

isn't there someone who always posts in caps on ocpaddler?

#16 Sat, 10/18/2008 - 11:54am

Random thoughts:

  1. This is the best website ever! I still want T-Shirts and stickers.
  2. Is there a comparable website or blog like this in Tahiti? I check out Hiro's page regularly but cant understand a thing.
  3. The past three Moloka`i Hoe have been held in less than ideal conditions. It hurts to say this: but if Shell does come back, and there is good surf, I can see them breaking the record by another eight to ten minutes.
  4. Hiro, Jim and jfaumeran, totally inappropriate but too funny to pass up; here's one for you guys:

#17 Sat, 10/18/2008 - 12:06pm

Shell Va'a need that trophy.
i mean, a world cup like this need a huge trophy, da kine that need a few to lift up.....maybe a wooden replica of a canoe in da waves.........hand-carved in KOA.....
and for sure.....if you win the channel 3 times......you take it home......to your club......

#18 Sat, 10/18/2008 - 12:40pm

Can anyone from Lanikai or Ohcra speak up in defense. Does this trophy exist?

#19 Sat, 10/18/2008 - 12:30pm

Yesterday, on TV, Richel Moux, president of Shell Va'a said "Don't mind if there is no trophy... Anyway people will never forget we won three consecutive times breaking the record each time !"
I just wante to know what other paddlers think about this issue. Last month, when we were talking about this trophy, NOONE said "This trophy does not exists, it's a myth"... And today, it seems that everyone thinks there is no such trophy... How come ?

numerouno, thanks for the fucking video.

#20 Sat, 10/18/2008 - 3:24pm

I kinda like what Pirato said about the trophy!

#21 Sat, 10/18/2008 - 2:31pm

...may be Poopoo can explain what "bandage of assholes" means.

My old 3 piece rock band had a similar name .. on the kick drum in big letters was
"The 3 R Soles"

#23 Sat, 10/18/2008 - 4:28pm

Why would Lanikai have the tophy? Outrigger won it three years in a row before Shell Vaa won it these last three times. Let's not get carried away. I'm sure everything will be worked out. And I already replied to the guy on Craigs List (boat for sale) who said that Lanikai needs cracks for keeping the trophy from Shell Vaa. I gave him my name and number for the cracks, because I paddle for Lanikai. He hasn't responded yet, so he's yow yow. Of course, all I want to do is pray for him :)

#24 Sat, 10/18/2008 - 4:34pm

is "bandage of assholes" the paddling version of 'band of brothers"

#25 Sat, 10/18/2008 - 4:35pm

agree with pwrdbygsus... what does Lanikai have to do with this story ? HCRA is running the Molokai Hoe. Am I wrong ?

#26 Sat, 10/18/2008 - 4:52pm

JAYBIRD
Hiro C...as usual you wrong. The O'ahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association sponsors/runs the Moloka'i Hoe.

Why would anybody want to be water??? Water is one of the most destructive forces in nature, and ALWAYS follows the path of LEAST resistance. I.E. it takes the easy way out.

Nuff said, I'm pau.

#27 Sat, 10/18/2008 - 5:30pm

OK so OHCRA and not HCRA (typing mistake can happen...) has to explain things...
Why would you want to be water ? Read about Bruce Lee...

#28 Sat, 10/18/2008 - 5:37pm

Jaybird needs some water to wash off the sand under his prepuce.

#29 Sat, 10/18/2008 - 6:09pm

That's nasty painteur...but funny !
FYI Tahitians have no prepuce ;-). We cut this useless piece of skin. In fact "Taioro" is the bigest insult here... it means that you have not been circumcised.
Taioro is fermented grated coconut... very good with raw fish, but it has a strong smell. When you are called taioro, it suggest that your prepuce has the same smell...

#30 Sat, 10/18/2008 - 6:19pm

I knew I'd get some knowledge out of this one.
Mahalo for sharing your culture.
respectfully your
"fermented grated coconut"

#31 Sat, 10/18/2008 - 6:23pm

hiro, didn't know the tahitians were the lost tribe

#32 Sat, 10/18/2008 - 6:24pm

We are not lost. The 12 other tribes are lost !

#33 Sat, 10/18/2008 - 6:36pm

Okay, so it's very good with raw fish, it smells like prepuce and it is the biggest insult.
Why are you eating it then?
I'm confused and scared now.

#34 Sat, 10/18/2008 - 6:38pm

no, they only serve it to "hauli" that's why...

"oh, this is the best, trust us..don't mind the texture.."

and in a pinch, you can always bandage the asshole with it.

#35 Sat, 10/18/2008 - 6:44pm

As I'm shaking off confusion and angst I realize it is the Limburger syndrome.
The Fatherland has a pungent cheese (Limburger) to offer. Offensive smell, as in unwashed feet. Not very good with raw fish at all. Very good with fresh baked bread (baguette) and monk beer.
You bring the Taioro with the raw fish and a Hinano
and I bring the Limburger with monk beer.
Good times!!

If you listen to painteur backward you can clearly hear "tahitian paddlers are evil".

#39 Sat, 10/18/2008 - 8:24pm

I haven't been following the banter here, and didn't see the Craigslist posting, but I have heard more on this issue than just that. And whomever the bonehead is who posted on craigslist has deleted the posting, presumably realizing that it was a foolish posting. Nevertheless, they should apologize to Lanikai Canoe Club for such absolutely absurd and insulting accusations. We respect and always have respected Tahitian paddlers, and we know how the Tahitian paddlers feel about us.

In the past there was a trophy. I have a photo somewhere of myself holding it in 1995 or 1996. Then I would see it on display at Bank of Hawaii, downtown Honolulu. To the best of my recollection, it is a big Koa paddle on a big stand, with a bunch of plaques on it. Can't say I remember seeing it in 2000, but maybe it was at the awards ceremony. And I am pretty sure it was not around in 2004 and 2005. The trophy to the best of my knowledge is property of Bank of Hawaii, and when the bank pulled out of the race, so went the trophy. I have not been to the downtown branch in years, so can't say if it is still there or not. And never in my years have we taken it home.

But the bottom line, end of discussion is that ever since the bank pulled out, there has not been a perpetual trophy that the Molokai Hoe race committee owns and/or perpetuates. Yes, there should be one again, and the race needs someone to step up and sponsor it. Without a large corporate title sponsor, the race is a money loser and those that run it are doing their best to keep it alive, and despite financial difficulties, make it thrive.

On the lines of sponsorship: It is a very prestigeous race and we all wish there was more awards, prizes and embellishments for the paddlers. But at least for the past 3 years, Shell has won $5,000.00 each year from Bud Light for winning. More than I ever won. Plus this year, Hale Koa stepped up to host a post race event on their grounds. Maybe not a perfect setting and event, but a good start to build on for the future. How many people supported this? Not many more than the winner's circle.

Our sport is not high profile, yet the paddlers really like to get things for free or almost nothing. But we all have to remember that we need to give back and support any sponsor that steps up. It would have been nice to see a few more people buy a beer in the beer garden and support Bud Light and the Hale Koa. Not to mention the free food for the paddlers that most paddlers did not eat. So, we have a year to plan. If anyone knows of any potential sponsors, speak up.

Shell is on fire and we hope that they come back. We want to win the Molokai "trophy" back, but unless the champs are there, a victory is hollow. Lanikai won't quit. But we also realize it is our turn to challenge in Tahiti so I think you will see more Hawaii crews racing in Tahiti in upcoming years. Thank you Shell for your continued participation in Molokai even though it costs a lot, and there is not much return except the pride and the history you make.

Aloha,
Jim Foti

Thanks Jim for telling us what you know about this story. Welcome to Hawaiki Nui.

#41 Sat, 10/18/2008 - 10:04pm

Found it. It was in the garage under a pile of t-shirts, Underarmour sleevelesses, towels, bicycle bottles, Platypus bladders and Camelbak tubes...

Think I got it from the Bank of Hawaii in exchange for some subprime mortgages.

Beautifully said Jim!

Perfectly said Jim Foti! Thank you very much for that. The best to Lanikai men's open crew in Hawaiki Nui. We'll see you guys on the next full moon.

Awesome Jim.....what a class post. Nuff said everybody, nuff said.

Just goes to show the passion that Tahiti has for paddling. The trophy news makes it to their newspapers!! Jim solved the mystery. I believe he is right. It is somewhere with Bank of Hawaii. Also, if people want to see that trophy, I believe there are a couple shots in Pete Caldwell's book on the Molokai Hoe that came out last year.

I posted last week and Jim confirmed it in his post....the road now runs through Tahiti...Hawaiiki Nui. Hawaii needs to figure out a way to get down there and compete.

With regard to the fundraising posts...here's my idea.

Lets get Seth...Livestrong Seth, the sugar daddy at Kukio...to get a few of his friends to part with some of their $$$, I said part with, not give. The idea is to have a 501 c 3 non profit, Seth and his buddies put their $$$ into the organization...lend it to us for 1 year...the idea being that at the end of the year, we give back their seed money, but we get to use all the interest earned.

Let's say for example, 5 guys gave $1 million each (dream big). That is $5 million. The organization keeps all the interest earned on that $5 million for that 1 year, then we give back each guy his $1 million that he put in. $5 million dollars worth of interest at a T-Bill (safe investment, no stocks) rate of 3 to 4%...that is some nice change. Everybody wins...organization does because it will have $$$ to play with, the rich guys will get a tax write off and losing 1 million dollars worth of interest for 1 year is chump change for these guys.

Granted, it does not solved the problem entirely, but it sure gives the situation a kick start. Shoot, OCHRA could possibly even afford to buy a trophy.

Jaws Out.

this thread fails. thanks for nothing hiro.

#50 Tue, 10/21/2008 - 7:24am

Jim, maybe your company could make the trophy. If we got more Tv, like ocean paddler Tv is doing, then more sponsors would step up. They want to see their name and logo's in media. We have to support the efforts of others to grow this sport for sure.

#51 Tue, 10/21/2008 - 1:44pm

my curiosity got the better of me so i just went to look in the dowtown branch Bank of Hawaii (dat's my bank!). the Molokai Hoe trophy is still there displayed in all its glory. Listed on plaques with others are 1976 winners Te Oropa'a, 1993 & 1994 Faa'a, and the last was 2001 New Zealand/Hawai'i. But since BOH is no longer a sponsor, I guess they dont present it at the awards ceremony, and no longer add winner's plaques to the trophy. I guess a new trophy is in order! someone???

#52 Tue, 10/21/2008 - 3:04pm

You all need to play nice! Write in to your Hawaii congressman or women and demand the state start to support it's state sport. And yes, if you have a company, please advertise..More media is what it will take to get more money for the sport.
Terry

#53 Tue, 10/21/2008 - 3:25pm

Damn those Lanikai paddlers! We all know that they snuck down there and put that trophy back once their plot was discovered.

#54 Tue, 10/21/2008 - 4:01pm

anyways, i was wondering if Shell Va'a got a trophy???? almost a month later, 3 times record braking kaiwi champs!!

#55 Mon, 11/10/2008 - 6:53am

There is no trophy. Ever since bank of hawaii dropped sponsorship. OHCRA should make a new trophy. This race deserves a trophy.

#56 Mon, 11/10/2008 - 8:21am

yes, i agree with you, eazypaddler, OHCRA should make a trophy and send it to Shell Va'a, and then make a new one for next year aswell.
