Newbie Update

Today is my birthday, 53 woohoo! so I played hookie to go paddle! Another S.D. bay run south to the end of the bay. 7.2 miles one way from my starting point, 1hour 14 minutes on my return run. Since it was creamy smooth rollers I pulled the back iako up a couple inches from bottoming in the ama. I didn't know if that makes a difference but it was a gorgous day so I was feeling more confident.
Couple of questions: I must add a 1/4 of a mile to my point to point just from zig-zagging! I concentrating on my stroke looking down then I look up and I'm headed 30 degrees in another direction! I'm always correcting.
What watch is the best to wear. I'm looking at Suuntos but which one, just want to keep easier track of my time. Thanks

Use a GPS. keep track of time, speed, and distance. Check out the Garmin Forerunner 305. It's a good one.

I just put a small square of velcro at the front of the footwell, and use either a cheap Timex or a Garmin if you need more info.

Garmins are cool-the only thing is your head is in the wrong position when you are looking at one, which is usually by your feet. This problem is further compounded when the stroker in an oc6 has one on the bulkhead in front of him. It's especially important for the stroke to have his head up. When you're just starting out, I don't think you need to worry so much about time/speed. Better to concentrate on feel/technique/form IMO.

If you go for the Garmin 305, pick up a tube of foam pipe insulation and cut a 3" piece, slide over front iaku near the junction at hull and attach wrist strap of 305 snug enough not to slip. You can then see the display without taking your eyes completely off the water.

Not to mention any names but there are people on this forum who could hand shape and mold you a carbon fiber mount. Of course it might be expensive, and others on this forum might get upset if they try to sell them.
Sorry to all, just could not resist.
