~ 420 vessels, more than 600 participants; results will be posted on ocpaddler and y2kanu.
The time keeping team said it would take a while to get everything ready for posting.

Winning time was about 1:16 ? for surfski and under 1:20 for OC 1.

does anyone know if ocean paddler will have any specials on it? or if any of the official boats got any footage?

Today was a fun event for all. It wasn't that much about winning, but supporting good cause, and as evidenced by the turnout, it was great support. Most of us just want to know how we did relative to the people we are used to racing against. Even if there a few mistakes when we get the results, that is all right. Just post what you have.

Mahalo Coast Guard!

The response from the paddling Ohana was simply awesome today on Oahu. We had anticipated up to 400 paddlers for the CG Foundation race and over 550 of you participated in grand style. We apologize for running out of the lunches but hope that you understand that your tremendous show of support was simply astounding and for that we send a big Mahalo!

Two of the widows of the flight crew were there during the pre-race registration and were very moved by the turnout. One of them rode on a safety boat and said that seeing all of the paddlers on the water made her feel so good that she was able to keep her composure when the rescue helicopter flew low over the course. She hasn’t been able to do that since the tragic helicopter accident eight weeks ago.

Results: Our volunteer timekeepers are working to put together the results. We expect to get them posted on the web in a few days. The top finishers came in at 1 hour 15 minutes. Congratulations to all finishers and thanks again for your support of the families of the crew of helicopter CG6505.

Great race today! I wasn't racing (on Mommy duty while Norm raced) but from what I saw there was great support for the Coast Guard. I was at the finish line and I gotta say...those Coast Guard ladies were trying really hard BUT they had never officiated a race like that before. They were a bit overwhelmed by the number of paddlers and I have to admit there were an amazing number of people there today. I expected the one mans to be there but the SUp paddlers and surfskis were in high numbers too! Truely a great day. I tried to help out at the finish line as long as I could and I gotta say...it was confusing! The race organizers made 250 boat numbers that were big and readable from afar. After using all of those numbers they used duct tape and a pen for the numbers! So...a lot of yelling "Hey, yellow boat...what's your number?" happened today. A big Mahalo to those ladies for their hard work. The results probably won't be totally accurate but they really worked hard and the important thing is that the community showed up to support the Coast Guard and everyone finished safely. The paddling community appreciates our Coast Guard personnel.

Aloha Tad, The whole paddleing community has always been indebted to the Coast Guard. I for one, am just saddened that we had to express or mahalo nui loa to all of you, due to the tragic circumstance. Great event. Paula Crabb and I had a great time. Best wishes to the family of the crew. Hope we made a difference. Ken Bailey

Great Race, Great Day

I hope it becomes an annual event.

Paddling for such a noble cause was an honor and a privilege.

Kudos to Tad and all who helped put this big race together in such a short period of time.

Solid.

Coming from the mainland this race was just mind boggling in its sheer volume of participants. Coming here perviously only doing the "BIG" races you only get to see the top paddlers coming out, so the number of participants is never this big. Looking down the start line was like looking down a start line of a running race, so many people.

#10 Mon, 11/03/2008 - 9:31am

Tad:

Perhaps you shouldn't have promised the results in a few days! We all understand the challenges of the day due to the large number of participants etc. Like I suggested earlier, post what you can, and we will all be understanding and not critical of what we see!

Mahalo again,
Mark Buck

Aloha

Here are some of the results. The second and third OC6 to finish did not have numbers visible, one is yellow and white the other red and white with Bradley lightning on the side. we can't idetify the top 3 for the OC6 divisions for this reason.
Please don't expect a list like you see after states...we had 504 participants and 264 craft on the water. Of these a couple of stand-ups were helped in by the jet skis and a couple of canoes were followed safely to shore by the Coast Guard Auxiliary. The rest of you were acounted for by FIVE volunteers standing on the rocks...which they did for safety, so we would know if any one was missing and needed to be found, for the race is not over until everyone comes home.
Overall top 3 finishers:

#18 Wed, 11/05/2008 - 10:13pm

The Coast Guard race had a tremendous turnout of familiar and new faces, a reunion of old friends all coming together for a good cause.

It speaks volumes about the love and support of the paddling Ohana and anyone who took part had to be moved in some way by the energy and spirit that moved the ocean on this day.

As I sit on my canoe on the water, the thought passes me, this is really what inspires me and many others to paddle - the friendships, the unity, the connection to the ocean, the diversity that spans so many generations and population groups. Its truly a unique sport that I am proud to be involved with.

A friend of mine was driving pass Maunalua Bay when she saw the masses and she could not helped but be moved by the sight of support.

I am saying all this because for all those who participated, we know what it felt like, how powerful the moment was and the tremendous influence and impact we can make as a collective group.

AlfredVG brought up the issue of fund raising and someone, (Rambo?) mentioned about linking paddling to community services so that we can have more influence and voice in the community.

I would encourage all of you to come out for the PA'A Food Drive race - a cause that will benefit so many people from babies to the elderly that will not have food during the upcoming holiday season that a lot of us have to share with family and friends.

This is the PA'A race info link...
http://www.ocpaddler.com/node/4389

If someone from PA'A can share more about this event, that would be great but I just wanted everyone to keep this race in mind and I hope you all can make the magic happen again.

Email info on this event to friends and family :-}

Great pictures.

Gives us something to look at in seeing all those crafts at the start. I even saw me in one of them.

The overhead shots were cool too.

Alohajack - mahalo for posting those pictures -the aerial shot of all the athletes - little specks in the ocean was pretty awesome, and that 'iako from the womens OC-6 looked very interesting.

and, huge thanks to the Coast Guard, crew members of the cutter Kukui, for removing tons of human pollution from the Northwestern Hawaiian island, Kure Atoll!!!

Tad:

This is a last time request for results. If what we saw in the post from last Wednesday is all there is, so be it. We realize how hard it was that day. If this becomes an annual event you can be assured that all that participated will probably be back, along with more next year!

Mahalo,
Mark Buck

Reposted the results. Found I had left off the top OC2 mix teams in the division results the first time.

Aloha,
Jack

That is a huge results document - all 9 pages - awesome - Thanks to you, Tad and crew - I can only imagine how overwhelming it must have been - you guys da best. Hope this becomes an annual event.

Its also nuts how fast Patrick Dolan is - 40 seconds behind first place surfskier Zsolt on an OC-1. If he was using a surfski, he would have taken the field, eat lunch, shower, nap and come back and still be able to watch the race's last finishers.

Great to see the young athletes in there as well! I think they should be in a separate division for under 18s ;-}

Awesome participation and support!

Next race - Nov. 22 PA'A Food Drive Race :-D
