I would like to throw out a challenge to the paddling community, specifically Hawaii, although anybody who wants to play along is welcome.
A little background---Here on Maui, a paddler named Peter Konohia began an event on Thanksgiving Day 8 years ago to accomplish 2 goals. One, to get a workout, and two to generate food donations for the less fortunate. This is done each Thanksgiving morning with a "race" with the "winner" is the one who guesses closest to his finishing time.Entry "fee" is canned goods.("Race" is approx. 3-4 miles)The true winners are the recipients of the donated food.
Which brings me to the challenge---This year the recipient of the donated food is the Maui Food Bank. I would like to challenge each Island's paddling community to raise as much food as possible for their respective counties foodbank by Dec. 1. There was a thread that spoke about sponsorship/fundraising and this could be a way to demonstrate the power of the paddling community through a statewide collective effort. Any feedback? Questions? We could call this the "Paddlers for Pounds" effort!

I am aware of the race scheduled for Oahu. I am not promoting any race, rather the ability of the paddling community to come together and use their numbers for a good cause. This has a two way effect- 1. The respective food banks receive generous donations, 2. Paddling community shows potential sponsors the numbers involved in paddling.
Each island could do whatever they want to raise food. Maui currently has a few businesses that are using collection bins to increase the poundage gathered for our thanksgiving day event(Tri-Paddle Maui, Maui Physical therapy, Maui Marriott among others).
