Kai Opua's Queen Liliuokalani Race Information

Aloha paddlers!

We invite you to log onto www.kaiopua.org to have a look our revamped web site.

All of our 2004 Queen Liliuokalani race information is posted and we encourage all clubs who plan on attending this year to register and pay your entry fees in advance. Imagine how much more streamlined your visit to the race registration office will be with your race packet prepared for you in advance. And international crews, we know paying in advance with a credit card will not only make the currency exchange easier for you; more importantly, it will also put you on a list of confirmed payment so we can in turn, confirm the loan of a canoe for your races.

You will still need to check in at registration to pick up your crew's race packet with race numbers, etc. If you haven't already down loaded the waiver and had crew members sign it, that will have to be taken care of at the registration office. Any crews entering age division races will need to provide copies of identification (drivers license). The race registration office and logo shop will open starting Wednesday, September 1.

RACE DAY SHUTTLE

For information on the race day shuttle service, click on Shuttle Service Form under Printable Forms. If you wish to use this service, we will need to know by Wednesday, Sept 1 in order to contract for the right number of buses.

NEW THIS YEAR!

We are fortunate to have strong participation at the Queen Liliuokalani race from many international and mainland U.S. crews. Out of state crews help create a big race atmosphere while they're are in Kona so we wish to honor them with a special night. Thursday, September 2, Kai Opua Canoe Club, Kona Brew Pub and KWXX Radio Station will host International Paddlers Night. All crews already in Kona from outside the state of Hawaii will be our guests at Kona Brew Pub from 6:00 to 7:30 pm to enjoy fabulous pizza, door prizes and a chance to meet with race sponsors and media (no host bar). From 7:30 on, the doors are open to the rest of Kona's paddling ohana to partake in the rest of the evening's festivities...great beer, food and music.

Saturday....as soon as the men's race concludes, an awards program will begin for that day's racing. Right in front of the King Kamehameha Hotel, while you re-hydrate, de-rig your canoe and debrief with your crew and friends about surviving another 18 miles on Kona's waters, we'll recognize the winning crews from the women's and men's iron division. Division winners will take the stage to receive their well earned medals and accolades from the crowd. (Non-iron divisions will be awarded at the Sunday luau)

Saturday evening will start out with the popular Torchlight Parade as usual. The parades ends at the King Kamehameha Hotel where there will be a party and dancing at the Luau Grounds.

Kona Brew Pub will also have their doors open Saturday night for a fabulous After Party........live music and more great, refreshing beer! For those who don't already know the Kona Brew Pub, it's only a block away from the race site and has award winning beers and fresh, delicious food. Kona Brew Pub is an active supporter of Hawaii's paddling community, and paddlers love their beer and grinds.

Sunday morning is non-stop racing....all starting and finishing at the pier....teen divisions long distance to start, then OC-1 and OC-2, as well as double-hull. Crews are encouraged to be prepared and on the starting line on time as there's a lot of racing to do before the Luau and Awards Ceremony Saturday afternoon.

Live event coverage can be heard all weekend long on KWXX radio,
101.5 in Kona.

Kai Opua Canoe Club looks forward to welcoming all the 2004 participants to Kona for another great year of racing and events at the Queen Liliuokalani Long Distance Canoe Race...the largest long distance canoe race in the world!
