Looking for Assistant Coach(es)

Aloha all - this is a repost (based on a recommendation from Terry Galpin - mahalo).

Does anyone out there know of a good resource for locating coaches? I am with a small new club on Oahu and we are looking to increase our coaching staff - we were unable to find any additional coaches last season… As we are now preparing for the upcoming season the search is on again - any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Mahalo,

I think that in a coach you are looking for three areas of knowledge. Someone who is inspirational, someone who knows technique, someone who knows how to train for endurance and speed. Its been my experience that finding all three in one person can be very difficult. Especially, I've found that many paddling coaches are very old school when it comes to training for endurance and speed.

Doesn't really matter, paddling, running, cycling, etc., training for the endurance and speed aspect is the same. Someone who knows how to maximize a person's endurance and speed in one will be able to do the same in the other sports.

So, can't really help you with finding someone for technique, but for the physical training aspect, you might consider looking outside of the paddling community (into competitive running, bike racing, etc.). Yeah, some people might say its strange having someone coaching who isn't a paddler, but in the endurance/speed part of training you might be surprised and find that it works.

Hope that this helped a bit.

May have been partially touched on in your other post that got hijacked. Start from within and ask your members if they know of someone or of others that you could ask for the positions. Start looking at your current members that could step up to the plate to help and have your current coaches start giving them the tools to be able to now while they can. They could get ready now to fill the positions if you can't get enough outside help.

Check with the high school canoe clubs currently starting and canvas them for possible candidates you could talk into helping you. Or they may know of others that could come over to your club when the regular season starts.

Posting your club/location may also help in narrowing where you can look for candidates or where others here on Oahu can direct someone interested to contact you/your club.
