any reason why this race is going to be ran backwards(upwind) again?

#1 Tue, 11/11/2008 - 1:35pm

Well typically, in the morning, there is no wind and the current runs towards Kihei CC. Secondly, it is easier to wash your canoes at Kihei CC then at Kamaole I.

I believe of the seven years we have had this race, it was never up wind. As a matter of fact, it was actually Kona winds one year and somewhat of a down wind to Kihei CC.

One year we thought of doing a loop starting at Kamaole I, but we ended up scratching it because that week the quadrathlon was doing the same course. So we stuck to the original idea to be somewhat "good neighbors".

They have since moved their race date into December so maybe we can revisit the race course again this year.

But if you have an idea for another course, call David Shields and let him know. I am going to be "working" on my tan in Washington state that weekend.

Thanks for posting this Peter. The main goal for this event is to collect as much food for the food bank as possible. If you would like to start a collection at your work and bring your collection to the start or finish line, the Food Bank would be grateful.
Happy Thanksgiving~David Shields

Last year was an anamoly as far as the wind goes, but pray for no wind anyway!

#3 Tue, 11/11/2008 - 2:53pm

actually first two years race was run from kihei canoe club site to kam I (no wind)...there was a logical reason (or seemed so at the time) for switching directions in year three...but can't remember anymore...maybe 'cause kapena had dog biscuits waiting for me at the other end...

aloha no

#4 Tue, 11/11/2008 - 4:19pm

...or maybe was kawiks with the dog biscuits...

#5 Tue, 11/11/2008 - 4:25pm

I stand corrected. Shaka has a better memory than I.

I didn't realize that Shaka was still interested in paddling.

Kapena still has dog biscuits waiting for you if you want any.

For everyone else, forget about the course and my memory, just bring down the food!!!

#6 Tue, 11/11/2008 - 4:27pm

yeah Peter....

i was just thinking about Shaka this morning, and wondering where Shaka went to.

i think maybe Shaka and Greg rode together in the back of a blazer with possibly Jenn driving. Of course Kapena not only had dog biscuits, but maybe "mud pie". need to ask Greg about that.

#7 Tue, 11/11/2008 - 4:52pm

Back to the race:

last year as i remember, there was a huge pick-up load of food donated for folks in need. that was something to give thanks for and as my memory recalls the first race was set-up by Shaka & Peter.

awesome job guys--

..."I didn't realize that Shaka was still interested in paddling"...
nah...shaka's interested in food...always gets my attention...eh, save me one drumstick

Your so fast on your canoe, I know you don't even feel the headwind, But yes, there was at least 3 years of headwind including last year's race. Speaking for the fathers who look forward to racing with their small children, upwind is not that fun ;-)

Yes we switched it that one year for Kona winds, just forgot to switch it back or better yet.....web announce the start of the race the morning of.

Have a safe trip to Washington!

Planning on doing the race with the kids on SUP's and had a few questions....

1) Are SUP's allowed?

2) Kids allowed to participate?

3) Only canned goods?

4)Start at KCC or Kam 1?

Hi KicBacMaui

Would you know what kinez of food the Mau'i Food Bank needs most of this year that we should bring?

#14 Wed, 11/12/2008 - 1:31pm

Aloha BMaui,
Here is a quick recap of the event information. Anything that floats means you choose what you want to be on the water with. The race start is scheduled for Kam 1. Any decisions on changes will be made that morning. My number is 385-1741 for people who want to call and find out that morning. the only reason I can think of to change the race would be wind like last year.

This is not a sanctioned event and there are no water patrol skis. This essentially is a group workout with food donations benefitting the Maui Food Bank and those citizens of Maui that utilize their services. there will be a raffle after at the finish, then it is off to your families or whatever it is you will do for Thanksgiving.

WAILUKU — Empty and nearly empty shelves show the alarming trend of more food going out than coming in at the Maui Food Bank, the agency relied on for meals by thousands of county residents hardest hit by the economic downturn, The Maui News reported today....

While the sour economy has squeezed the agency's supply of food donations, leaving it with about 20 percent less compared with a year ago, more food is going out its doors to about 100 soup kitchens, churches and groups that distribute meals to residents on Maui, Molokai and Lanai.

Food banks statewide are having the same struggle.

An article from the Maui News 10/17/2008.

Do what you can to help any food drive. In this event, even if you are not paddling, but would like to contribute, Tri-Paddle and Maui Physical Therapy in Wailuku have drop boxes for this event. Otherwise, we will see you on Thanksgiving Day!!

Big Mahalo to all the Maui paddlers who showed up for the "Paddle for the Hungry" Kam 1 to Kihei Canoe Club. There were close to 90 participants on OC1, OC2, OC6, SUP, and Paddleboards. This was a family affair as many parents had kids that hitched a ride on their water craft of choice. The youngest looked to be about 4 years oldand the oldest, well, there were a lot of people. All in all conditions were flat and easy with many prizes raffled at the completion of the paddle. The biggest winner of all is the Maui Food Bank with over 600 pounds (estimate) of non-perishable food items donated. Mahalo Maui! Truly No Ka Oi!

Mahalo to Kamanu Composites, Tri Paddle Maui, Hammer Nutrition (Rob), Kimo's Lahaina, and the Marriott's Maui Ocean Club for their generous donations for the prize giveaway.

I agree..... paddled with my 4 yr old daughter and had a blast.

Her greatest comment midway thru the race - I asked her how many boats were behind us and she said "Dad, how about the ones in front of us?" "Daddy, paddle faster!"

Little slave driver!
