Newbie questions

Does one set the rear iako a different depth into the ama depending on conditions? Also I have a klunking sound in the body of the hull while i'm paddling. It's the same sound as when you bottom out the iakos into the hull. The iakos are tight so I can't figure out where it's coming from? This is on a Zephyr....

I had a surfski with a piece of "stringer" broken and moving inside the hull. It was making a "klunking" sound. Check that.

like hiro said, could be a stringer chunk, some putty from the lay-up left over accidentally from the closing of the boat, or a loose rudder cable bouncing against the stringer.

If you can't shake the item out that is doing the "klunking" from the plug hole your S.O.L. without cutting the boat open.

Yes, you CAN set the rear iako a different height, find a height and get used to that then pull more of the tube out to lighten the ama and then get more accustomed to that setting, till you find a height you like and pretty much stick with that regardless.

good luck, let us know what you discover.

Yes, I set the rear iako lower for more stability in rougher waters and higher out for a tippier ride in flatter waters.

As for the clunking noise, even though the bolts are tightened and won't let them come out, the ends of the iakos can still move up/down in the tube while paddling. I know I hear it on both my Fusion and Zephyr and can happen on either side when I'm paddling.

The other times I hear a similar noise is from the rudder moving up/down in the rudder tube when it hits a side current or from my paddles wake or swell.

That sound could be something to do with the iakos and how they fit into the hull. If the hole in the hull is larger than the iako itself it could be shaking. This can be fixed with a piece of tape wrapped around the iako to make the fitting a little more snug.

The placement of the iako in the back is all on preference. A good place to start is deeper so the boat won't feel as tippy, yet the down side to this will be a slight lean to the left which may cause cramping in your legs sooner because you will be trying to compensate by leaning to the right.

On a personal note I ride with the boat slightly leaning to the left so when I fly the ama it won't feel like I'm going to fall off the canoe when its in the air. Yet the placement of the ama varies to what kind of conditions I'm going to be paddling in, big waves on the left rig heavy, big waves on the left rig lighter, if its flat what ever is comfortable.

I just got a new rack for a Jeep Wrangler and did not mount any cradles yet, just foam pads and strapped on my Fuze. When I hit a bump there's a big rattle from the back. I kept checking and checking and it wasn't the kanu hitting the rack or the Jeep, it was the rudder kinda bouncing up and down (the boat is mounted hull up) and makes the clunk. A combo of the play in the rudder shaft between the hull and the cables
rattling makes a noise.
I cut 1 1/2" off mi iakos and set the rear mount pretty high up unless it's big; you can adjust on the fly if you like till you get comfortable, then then try and lighten it up a little more each time out.

What did cutting the iakos do? Did you cut the length off the ends going into the hull?

Herman, read more about shortening iakos and what it does in this thread.

And yes, you would cut the iakos at the end that goes into the hull. As cutting the ends that go into the ama wouldn't change the distance of the ama from the hull on a Zephyr.

ok, now to change the subject or thread jack or anything, and im really sorry to the thread starter if im doing so. but, being a teenager who can't drive, is there someone on the island of oahu who i can trust to bend or cut iakos for me? and if so, how much would bending or cutting cost?

thanks for all the help and sorry for jacking your thread,
