Pa'a race results

Anyone hear anything about yesterdays results?

Submitted by MBD on Sun, 11/23/2008 - 10:04am

About 70 paddlers.

The Pueo seems to do well. Conventional amas with shorter waterline have more 'induced' drag.

Nice race day. Better not post results that may not be correct, imo.

Well gang, the Thanksgiving Food Drive and Race really proved to be a test for all those who participated. We raised enough food so I won't go hungry for at least a year...kidding. The food will be greatly appreciated by the Hawaii Food Bank.

As for the weather, we waited to the last minute to decide on actually running the race. Conditions changed at the start of the race and it became really peaceful once we got underway. With a nice cool overcast and some clean fresh air that the rain made, paddlers had their work cut out for them without any bumps or help out there.

Big thanks to our safety crew, Dave and Danny Louie, and Ian Forester for making sure everyone was okay from start to finish. In the end, we experienced only one canoe casualty but still got everyone in safe.

There was difficulty with timing since many paddlers crossed the finish line twice, or forgot to use their numbers, so don't mind the results if they are not completely accurate. Thanks to the PA'A staff for all their hard work and sacraficing their day to allow for everyone else to be entertained at the race.

Thanks to Lulu's for hosting the event, and thanks to all our sponsors: Steinlager, Makana Ali'i, NS Air, Dakine.

Hope to see you all after the Holidays to start off the new year at the Holiday Burnoff January 3rd 2009.

Aloha,
Manny

Awesome job Pa'a staff.

The shuffle board tournament at lulu's was the best part.

#4 Sun, 11/23/2008 - 7:43pm

Looking at these results its obvious that the Pueo is very popular and obviously very efficient in flat conditions, with a broad range of body sizes aboard, are they really that good? How do they perform in the bumps?
We are still a long way off seeing one here in Oz I think, but i would love to try one, how would it compare to a Pegasus for example.

#5 Sun, 11/23/2008 - 8:39pm

i was supposed to race this one, but couldn't due to weather and parents and ILH paddling practice, but how was the conditions and weather out there? i would assume that it was cold rainy and flat, but what did you guys think?

thanks,
kcchee11

It was cool, drizzling and flat! Always a good time paddling in the rain though, and lulu's was well deserved.

#7 Sun, 11/23/2008 - 11:23pm

Lulu's was great the rice and stew were amazing!!! There wasn't and wind but thanks to the rain it kept it cooler. Great race good fun.

#13 Mon, 11/24/2008 - 2:14pm

No wonder no one can get any carbon fiber.....

Kamanu has it all ... hahahaha

Pueo looks like Oahu s` favorite new ride from this list .

#14 Mon, 11/24/2008 - 3:42pm

it doesn't have to be just Oahu's favorite, i bet they ship to the east coast too.

#15 Mon, 11/24/2008 - 6:22pm

nice job yourself Eckhart.

Thank you, painteur.

Not all boats are mentioned correctly; Jane was on her Pegasus, as an example.
Please take it with that 'grain of salt'. I also do not mean to promote any boat, I find them all quite beautiful and am inspired by many of them.

I paddled the Pueo once myself and have paddled 'against' it quite a few times, flat up to medium conditions, I have not seen it in 'big' conditions: I have seen people improve their performance quite impressively compared to last year/their other boat.

  • It may be that the ama design makes a big difference.
  • The boat is not a high volume boat, that means the wet surface area is relatively small.
  • The boat is very well balanced, the ama comes up very easily, effortlessly and gently on every stroke, at least on the right.
  • The rudder looks really good.
  • on my Hurricane I moved the seat/foot well 6 inches forward; it definitely works for me. In comparison, the Pueo has the foot well at about the same distance from the bow.
  • for my size, 6'5, I would need to adapt the cockpit a little bit to get a good seating position, probably by moving the foot well forward by 2 - 3 inches.
  • the Pueo is great in the flat, observed in a canal. Paddling 'against' it on a Hurricane, I have to paddle the ama very, very light to regain an advantage.
That's why I think that the ama design is most responsible for the good performance.

These are obviously just my own impressions. Please share your opinions so that people interested get a more complete picture. Try to paddle the boat and you can judge these impressions better.

Eckhart - thanks for doing the break down on the OC-1 models in the race - theres an impressive showing of Pueos on the water. It wil be fun to see how the season shapes up as more ppl start to get back into the OC-1 racing season - hope you will post this list on your blog as well where it is easier to find and to compare with the coming races.
