Ok I just read that thread on that dragonboat forum, and it's just stupid all around.

You've got your typical internet theorist quarterbacking on one side, and a bunch of guys bragging about themselves on the other.

It's like a circle jerk and every monkey is invited.

oc-6 is better. Dragon boats are just too gay. I mean your crammed in super close together with like 20 other guys all sweaty and glistening with water, just too homo. At least in a 6-man your spread out and there's only 6 glistening sweaty men.

Poopise

However, quantity often has a quality all it's own. Mmmmmm... glistening....

Heck....to change paddling sides on a Dragon boat you got to pull into shore.
dragon Boat paddlers are hung up on either being a lefty or a righty.... I think this is what side they like to pack their...lunch on.

I remember seeing the surf life savers that paddled the rowbaot... they called it a surf canoe?
Those guys bodies belonged in cartoon. The were only built on one side. It was like watching a nerd morth in to an athlete but something horrible went wrong.

dragon boat paddlers will have the same problems down the track.

If you are going to have a work out you need to balance the body... or take corrective measures in the gym.

Also... Have you ever watched one of those boats being carried? .... there are 20 odd paddlers, carrying the craft but only about 5 are ever lifting.
I took some photos about 10 yeras ago of the facial expresions of some crews walking the craft back to the sheds.
The facial expressions and viens in the neck or the lifting few, said it all.

Dragon boating really has a great social side.
It is corperate slut heaven.
It is the Office Christmas party with dozens of other offices to boot.
So forget the paddling side of Dragon Boating... just go to their after functions

OK, so how do we get this thread onto their forum?

This is my DB club. I wasn't on the World Championship team as I started this year and was lucky enough to make the Premier Women's team for Nationals in Long Beach, CA. Check it out... it's eye-opening how awesome these athletes are:

DB is what got me started in outrigger. To make the DB team, you have to do a number of 500M OC-1 trials, so you have to learn to outrigger. As soon as I got back from Nationals, I started OC-6. This is my OC-6 club, awesome athletes here, too:

One sport feeds another. It's unbelievably awesome to be lucky enough to do both in my own back yard.

The connection: Awesome athletes and people in both disciplines! Now quit smack-talking (smiley face here).

Philly DB is pretty strong.
Performance in Sydney was excellent.
Now... admittedly... y'all did recruit a whole stack of OC paddlers for that crew, no?

#10 Wed, 12/10/2008 - 2:28pm

Excellent is kind of an understatement, no? Overall World Champs, Nation's Cup and two World Records... wooohoooo! (And I was NOT on that team, unfortunately). We do both DB and OC here in Philly. Most of the Sydney team (PDBA) came from Philly with some other great athletes from around the US, some OC, some Kayak/Canoe. Most of our best guys and gals are great DB'ers and great OC'ers. Kind of hard to do DB without OC, since that's how we test. Once you learn OC for the testing, it's so cool you kind of get sucked right in without even knowing it ;> So you end up joining Philly Outrigger (POCC). Then you are stronger for DB, can paddle both sides (don't have to go back to the dock, we just switch places out on the water), and then have more fun doing DB. One sport feeds another ;>

That Philly mens team only recruited two new guys (as in never been in a DB until day before racing started) from the west coast to that team. They had people from all over the US, but seeing as how it was the US team I can only see how it was appropriate to invite paddlers of great quality from all over.

poops,

ever paddled a coed dragon boat? much more fun...

#13 Wed, 12/10/2008 - 4:52pm

Yeah some of those women are hard core, why do you think the Philly team set a WR in the mix 500. It sure wasn't the men they had with them.

#14 Wed, 12/10/2008 - 5:00pm

Tpoppler, weren't you one of those outrigger guys on the world champion crew?

#15 Wed, 12/10/2008 - 5:11pm

Maybe...

#16 Wed, 12/10/2008 - 5:13pm

you are so busted

#17 Wed, 12/10/2008 - 6:14pm

ok, you guys really gotta stop calling dragon boat paddlers DBers.

here's why

#18 Wed, 12/10/2008 - 10:07pm

OK, I'll admit it, I had the day off from work yesterday and decided to harass the DBers! What a dick! They're a sensitive people, I see. Here's a killer video of some DBers trying to reinvent the wheel when it comes to paddling technique. Why would anyone ever teach people to paddle that way? He should have his license revoked.

#19 Thu, 12/11/2008 - 6:16am

I'm not sure that was melodramatic enough. Maybe more music and fancy, quick graphics would help....

Sheesh...watching that video is like drinking syrup straight from the bottle (which is a horrible pre-race strategy, by the way)

#20 Thu, 12/11/2008 - 6:55am

This is like discussing the merits of wakeboarding on a surfing forum. Nothing wrong if you do it but not worth comparing

#21 Thu, 12/11/2008 - 7:05am

Straight maple syrup shots are pretty good.

#22 Thu, 12/11/2008 - 8:54am

syrup shots might be OK for dragon boating. Its only short sprints, syrup is perfect.

dragon boating is still massively homo though.

JC, what's the address for the video? It won't play embedded.

#26 Thu, 12/11/2008 - 4:22pm

How do you find this stuff???

#27 Fri, 12/12/2008 - 5:18am

Hilarious video! Maybe the guy in the video IS jc9.

#28 Fri, 12/12/2008 - 6:46am
