GoPro Wide Cam angles Test Video for Karel Jr Shoot

These are the GoPro Wide Camera angles I've selected for the Karel Jr shoot in Perth World Cup in Western Australia on the 17th Jan 2009. I'll also be shooting Hi Def from a Jet Ski.

I think these are excellent angles. What do you think?
I will also be shooting Hi Def from a Jet Ski.

See short video here

or here

This should be of interest to any one with a GoPro Wide or thinking of upgrading to one.

I am totally impressed as an artist and a digital imager at the quality of the GOPRO...camera...great color CMOS ..A1 in my book just from what I see and read..and to think still frame digital slr camera's cost $28,000 in 1995..( no lense or batteries included and were Lithium Niobate Sensors and needed "hot-mirror" filters to keep the color moire pattern and color fringing out of the picture....So i write not as a paddler but as an artist respecting another artists great accomplishemts ..I gotta buy one of these..GO PRO'

In the past you had the rear camera on a higher mount - I think that may give you better 'action' footage.

If you have the camera that low you don't see what the paddler has in front of himself; that may limit the use of that angle.

On the video where you had the rear cam higher - the one where you suggest to have an ad on your back - it is in a perfect position.

Yeah i know what you mean Ecky, but to do that i need an extension 3 -4ft high and it's not safe or practical in a race.

Don't forget these GoPro camera angles will mostly be used as cut a ways or fill for the footage shot from the jet ski, so the main camera will show what is in front. I may also run a 3rd GoPro wide from the rear iako facing forward and angled slightly in, so this will capture from the rear of the cockpit to the front of the canoe and beyond including most of the Ama also.

looks great, very sharp.cant wait.

#6 Sun, 12/28/2008 - 7:43pm

The other issue of forward facing cams is water drops on the lens, if it's low it get flushed, if it's high then that won't happen, but droplets usually cause problems at 4ft high from paddle splashes etc. or Jr rooster tails ....haha.

The 5 mega pixel stills are awesome, post some samples later tonite.

Rambo, I figured you would not be able to use your extension. Jr should be able to handle it though.

We are all excited about your endeavor. Good luck.

That first angle has been what I've been looking for to film/study my own technique. Have you been able to capture that view using the regular GoPro? Is the camera mounted to the iako or the ama?

#9 Mon, 12/29/2008 - 5:06am

I know that the stills with the new camera are higher resolution, is the video higher resolution also?

#10 Mon, 12/29/2008 - 5:10am

No the Video resolution is the same as the original go pro
(According to the spec sheet on the new wide angle go pro that I got for Christmas) (-:

#11 Mon, 12/29/2008 - 6:19am

New sensor ... 3mp to 5mp and firmware upgrade. Resolution is still 512 x 384.
Cam handles exposure much better than STD GoPro.
Has Neutral Density coating in inner lens.
Best results on bright sunny day.

Hawk the Cam was mounted where the Ama and Iako meet. The STD GoPro would need to be 6 feet further away for the same view.

I've been messing with my own wide angle and love it. As far as learning from Karels technique he always says not to use him to emulate.

True Painteur, but most of us don't get to see the Worlds best OC1 surfer in action that often. I think it will be more inspirational than educational. ... if the "Doctor" blows???

Loving these GoPros. I have an assortment of cameras for doing SUP surfing and paddling photos/videos for my blog. An expensive and very clumsy helmet cam, a Xacti waterproof video/still cam, and an Olympus 770SW video/still waterproof cam as well as a Nikon D80 with a couple of big lenses for shooting from the shore. All but the Nikon have been pretty much supplanted by the GoPros.

Easy to mount, easy to use, and the features are uniquely beneficial for action water shots and videos. The biggest challenge I've found so far is appropirate mounts--at least for SUP boards. Might be a little easier on OC's.

I'm doing an article on Ke Nalu http://www.kenalu.com on home-made mounts. Should be done in a day or two. I'll repost when it's ready to go and put the most relevant photos here.

#16 Mon, 12/29/2008 - 1:30pm

For a SUP board the paddle mount has to be the most versatile, you can point it anywhere you want and it acts as a stabilizer like a mono-pod. You can turn the cam on and off, wipe down the lens, talk into it like a microphone to do commentary, etc.

One of the problems with most other video cams is they can't handle the jello wobble, their processors can't compress the data quick enough. The GoPro video is different it takes full frame stills and saves them in an mjpeg format to play as a video.

High motion ocean shooting challenges most video cams, even very expensive ones, so the little GoPro is quite good at what it does for the $.

How many OC paddlers are likely to show up for the Doctor?

#18 Mon, 12/29/2008 - 2:23pm

Hey Rambo,

I'm on the verge of buying a gopro and wanted to know which if you got the Surf Hero and if the mounts included work will for an oc1.

Cheers!

Don't know fuzey. but Dean Gardiner and the organizers are expecting plenty
http://www.surfski.info/content/view/929/147/

Scotty, that all depends on where you are going to mount it. The surf hero looks like not so good for Oc1. Go MotorSports WIDE or buy the surf and grab a mounts bag.

See here for the options

Got to see a GO Pro wide yesterday ..my local friend her a car racer..in New England...has one mounted front and rear on the car..and is complaining that battery time is only 15 minutes with a fully charged set of 2500 mah NiMH batts and the 2gb SD card ..Am wondering if its the write speed of the card...as..he got the 40x which is not as fast as many of the newer series ?? Got any answers for this ?? I know in my own Digital SLR Fuji I use the new 2950 mah 4 x AA batts and they last in on mode 6+ hrs of shooting and its a 12 megapixel camera ?? So what are the best AAA batts for the GoPro Wides .??

lithium

#22 Wed, 12/31/2008 - 7:37am

I run Energizer rechargeables and get 55+ minutes.

#23 Wed, 12/31/2008 - 7:53am

New England?? is that cold there?? If so you need Lithium's or heat up the rechargeables in a pocket warmer for half hour and put into the GoPro still warm. Once in there they will maintain the heat themselves as they discharge.

I get at least 1.5 hrs out of AAA Eveready Rechargeables and i have 30 of them, all perform the same.

A good quality charger is a must, preferably a 30min fast charger.

If only i could perform as well as my batteries !!! .... oh well.

Cheers Rambo

New England ; cold ,? depends on what you call cold , everyone has a different tollerance for it.

Right now its10 degrees F and blowing . To me , thats not cold yet . Im happy running around at 20 below F , kind of hard to find liquid water to paddle on when its like that though.

The ice accumulates on your hull and ama from the spray and after a while the boat becomes very heavy .

Sometimes its better to hang out with the cat by the woodstove when its` really cold....

I guess the Lith ION 's would be the better batt for a GOPro ..everyone uses them at the motor race tracks in New England now as well

That's the current weather for the observatory at the top of Mt Washington. Are you actually at the top of Mt Washington?

#28 Wed, 12/31/2008 - 5:37pm

Lithium ION AAA rechargeable batteries only come in 3.6v not 1.5 or 1.2v

Put 2 of these in your GoPro and goodbye Cam forever.
